4WD box change for a FWD

Post by JH1rvey »

I have been thinking that if I was to get a donner GTX/GTR 323 would a front wheel drive box be able to replace the 4WD :welder: box usually found on the tubs 323?

Oh yay, this topic again.

The way you say it, you want to convert your 323 GTR/X into a FWD only?

That's not normally the case. Normally people want to make AWD MX-3's. The answer is, yes you can, but you need a lot of fabrication, including a drive shaft tunnel.

No no you miss understand I want to turn my mx3 into a turbo FWD but as they say theres no replacement for displacement. I've got a 1.6 and the GTX/GTR uses the bigger 1.8 turbo which is what i'm after otherwise I will have to bore the engine and then add the turbo which is more work then I think that old engine can take it's 150,000 mile car.

So instead to save me a lot of time and effort (not saving hardly any money :( ). I think it would be easier to track down a GT which has a damaged body but decent engine drop that it my car and instead of having to create a transmission tunnel and making the car way as much as the moon upgrade my current gearbox.

Then you're asking a silly question.

The 1.8L DOHC I4 is the same block and head found on (depending where you live the name changes) Escort GT, Protege LX, 323 GTX/GTR, Kia Sephia, Mercury Tracer LTS. The GTX/GTR had a turbo and stronger internals, but the standard BP can handle 12PSI on stock internals.

You can find the BP motor fairly easily in North America. Sourcing a manifold and turbo isn't too hard. you can also bolt this to your original transmission, or find a G series out of any of the above mentioned non-4WD cars. The G transmission has held over 300WHP on BPT's.

You don't need the AWD transmission at all. If you wanted to use it, you'd be doing it the hard way, and stupid way.

I can only find 1 tiny problem with that i'm no where near north America i'm an ocean away I'm in England. It was just an idea putting the bigger engine in as the 1600 hasn't the displacement needed I'm sure it will be just fine but I want a bigger engine nontheless.
