Swap door locks
How hard is it? I tried search, got nowhere. I swapped out a passenger door, and need to get the old lock back in it.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Swap door locks
How hard?
Not.
There is a little clip type thing on the back, just pop it off, and pull the lock out the back. Its the cutest little thing, and I really don't want to pop it apart to see how it works. I bet its like all the parts of a transmission, crammed into a film canister.
Picture to go with:

Re: Swap door locks
Do you need to remove the latch/handle to do this? Or can the lock/tumbler assembly pass out the little opening on the door?
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Swap door locks
Do NOT need to remove handle, but it makes it easer to work with... its not hard to remove to handle.

Re: Swap door locks
The whole job takes about an hour start to finish and 20 minutes will be your getting the little metal clip that holds the lock into the door back onto the lock. It needs to sit exactly the same way it came off, so take a pic with a camera if you can, before you remove the clip.
I've taken my locks out more than a few times b/c the stupid key design on my car has a really thin spot right at the bottom of the teeth, giving it a serious weak spot. I finally found a pretty good deal and replaced them all, but before that I used to pop the lock out of the door to get the piece of a key out of the lock...

Re: Swap door locks
The image shows it coming out the back, i.e. inside the door. Does it actually push out the door?
Thanks!

Re: Swap door locks
the door handle goes out from the door and the lock goes back from the door handle. undo the one spring clip that holds it in and the one clip that holds the rod, this pushes sideways then the rod slides out from it. the inside of the tumbler has i think ten plates and springs that move up and down when the key is inserted. my friends passenger side was wrong so i moved the plates around and the ones that did not go all the way in got the dremel sander to shave them down.
