So, I was looking at all the eBay tailights, and I know for sure I want to get the black background ones. Not the carbon fibre ones, but the actual black backing ones. I also want to have them "smoked".
Now, I know there is a perfect black set on eBay, and there is a smoked set as well.
Would I be better off saving the $30ish and buy the regular ones, or spend the extra $30 and get the ones already smoked?
Ultimately, in the end, I want black background, smoked tailights.
I have never smoked any lights before, so I have no idea of the work involved.

Get the smoked ones. If you try to do it yourself they wont turn out as good.

Yea. I am not saying you wont do a good job, but over time these smoke tails from ebay will still look good and the self smoke will just end up being crappy. Here is a pic of them on a mx3, this is Shades car:

darn, all the smoked ones I see have chrome backgrounds. i want smoked black background ones.
