Need Your Opinions

Post by _-Night-Shade-_ »

I found a ZE for sale for 400 bucks with 5 speed tranny bolted on... Guy says he had it in his MX-3 but got rid of it so now he has no need for the engine. I checked it out, head codes check out, it's got the straight neck manifold. Everything looks in order, turned it over at the crank. The price makes me very suspicious but I couldn't find anything wrong with it... I guess the only risk would be not knowing if it's got like a cracked piston or a hairline crack in the block under the VC or something... Guy says it's got 120,000km and 70,000 on the clutch. He's including all the pumps and accessories like alternator and disty. Should I take it?

That price is kinda low, did you check the colour of the metal under the front valve cover? That's a pretty good indication of how well cared for the motor was.

Haha I was about to text you to look at this thread. Yeah I looked, it was a light golden color, no visible gunk. Seemed in good shape to me.

That's pretty good. Any gunk on the side of the motor or anything?

Nothing I could spot. All the gaskets looked mint, no oil anywhere.

Dude, these days people want to get rid of what they can't use for any money they can get, why do you think pawn shops are turning people away?

Has a straight neck on it? Howd he get it into a mx3? The average mxer would have issues. Make sure headcodes r legit. Check sparkplugs to for condition

He actually was using a KL02 VAF with it and he said his piping for his CAI cleared the brake booster.

EDIT: And yeah, KL31-101 on one head, KL31-1A1 on the other.

Ah s*** it's an hour away and I didn't take any pics. There wasn't much to tell from the coolant areas. Everything looked dry and clean. I'm gonna email him and ask for some close up pics.

Hey what's his name, phone number and address "just in case he's on our bad list" :D You could do a compression test on the spot just to be sure. That would give you a ball park estamit. For $400 I wouldn't screw around, prices like that are hard to find.

PS Ryan, I'm getting a DE for free. Low kms, it's in a Probe to boot.
2004 Subaru WRX Silver, stage 2, minty interior.
2002 Subaru WRX Blue, SOLD (best E test numbers I've ever seen)
94 MX-6. Sold
92 GS KLZE 5 Speed
96 GS 5 speed, KLZE, Sold
95 GS Minty Shape Sold
92 GS Sold
92 GS Parts Car scrapped.
