g-series mtm transmission in mx6, 626, and probe

Post by 94mx3precidia »

Okay ive done some research and i need some clairification. Ive read that you can replace a v6 mx-3 tranny with a mx-6, 626, and probe between the years of 93 to 97. am i correct? There are some places around here that have 626 transmissions but $400 cdn for a tranny with 165k doesnt seem that swell. So let me know what you guys know. Thanks.

Yes, as long as it's the trans from a 93+ 626/Mx6/626/Probe with the 2.5L v6, they are interchangable. The 626/mx-6 had a longer final drive

I'm selling a used mx-3 trans for $150

It's suppose to be perfect. I don't remember the milleage. I got it from a friend's Mx-3 that he was parting out. It was actually the only trans I could find at the time; powdercoasters sandblasted the inside of my trans casing so it was useless. It was sadly going to be torn apart for my custom trans, but that's not happening, which is good since it's hard to find one in good running shape.

To the best of my knowledge, all mx3, mx6, and 93-95 Probes had the same 4.10 final drive. The 96/97 Probes had the 4.38 final drive.

I'm not even going to argue this anymore.

Orly? If you have better information, post it up. I'm not keen on posting inaccurate data. From my own 8+ gearbox disassemblies and the PT reading that's the conclusion I've drawn.

All posted specs list a final drive of 4.105 for the Mx-6/626 and the Probe/Mx-3 to be 4.388:1

Alot of people recently are saying that those are not true, however it's more likely, and I know a few that confirmed by the VIN that the trans they encountered were not original to the car and swapped with the different ratio. You got to think that the Probe/Mx-6 is 12 years as it's youngest, there's good chances now that the trans may of been swapped/serviced, especially if they're prone to cracked cases and syncros going out.

Gro Harlem has alot of trans info. Considering all the ones he pulled apart and basically the one who came up with the MSP LSD combo.

viewtopic.php?f=23&t=41214&p=267366&hilit=4.105#p267366" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
FYI for those who are out of the know....the list below details the G-series mazda gear box:

Cars with 4.39 final drive:
-92-96 MX-3 GS with 1.8 V6
-93-97 Ford Probe GT

Cars with 4.11 Final drive:
-90-94 Mazda Protege LX (1.8 dohc)
-95 Protege ES
-93-97 Mazda 626 and MX-6 (both 4cyl and 6cyl
-98-02 Mazda 626 (all models)
-01-03.5 Protege (all with 2.0 engines)
-91-94 Mercury Capri (all) note, these all have a cable operated clutch (which doesn't really matter if ur just taking the gears)
-91-96 Ford Escort GT or LX-E (with 1.8 dohc)
-91-96 Mercury Tracer LTS (with 1.8 dohc)
-97-Present Ford Escort & ZX2 (ALL MODELS, either 2.0 SPI or Zetec...all have a G-series gear box)
Mitchell OnDemand lists the Mx-3 as G5M-R while the Mx-6 and 626 as G25M-R. No reference to the Probe trans, it links to the Mazda chart

There seems to be issues with the referencing numbers from different sources and even manual revisions; G5M-R, G15M-R & G25M-R, but they tend to refer to them all as G25M-R regardless. My official Mazda Mx-3 manual says " G5M-R Transaxle". The only true way would be to cound the teeth on the diff or the pinion gear.

My only source of confusion on this topic is that in the iMazda.com trans rebuild w/ 626 5th gear and MSP LSD they claim to be using a stock probe tranny, but you can clearly count the teeth in one of the pictures (and I did count them...many times) and it's a 4.105 ratio. Which it would have to be as the MSP LSD is 4.11.

I insisted that it cannot be a probe tranny, but one of the members there stated that 96 & 97 probe G trannies were 4.11's and only the early probes had 4.38's. I have yet to independently confirm that.

Well, I remember reading a while back that the Probe was fitted with larger tires, but to keep the performance specs they put in the lower geared trans. It's possible that was changed in the later years.

It's been years since I've read that, but looking for it, I've found this:

The Mazda's manual gearbox has a different part number to the Probe's
