Clunk on clutch engagement (but not from the clutch)

Post by nightfire »

Ever since I swapped in my ZE and LSD transmission, I've noticed a slight clunk when engaging the clutch. It sounds and feels like it's coming from the axles / differential. It's particularly noticeable if I leave the brakes on and clutch out quickly (not enough to stall); it sounds as though something is spinning freely, then slams into the gear teeth of something else. It's definitely not the clutch springs (clutch is brand new, and it just doesn't sound like that).

Is this normal? Does anyone else have this oddity?

Everything else seems fine... no other symptoms. I'm just wondering if I'm putting too much stress on something else that'll cause a premature failure.

sounds like either a axle or your half shaft. was this lsd already installed in the tranny when you got it? or did you put it in?

Came installed.. it was one of those rare factory LSD-equipped G25's.

I think you might be right about the axle/halfshaft. I'll check the bolts on the halfshaft support to make sure they're still tight.

sounds like something's moving in the diff to me. If you move forward slowly till you hear the clunk, then move backward slowly, would you hear it again? I'd say something may have let go in there and is rotating where it shouldn't.

That's what I was afraid of.. :(

I'll try that test. It definitely gets worse/louder when the car rolls back a bit with the clutch in, followed by a clutch slip. But I don't recall hearing a clunk as the car rolls back (but of course there would be far less stress than a clutch engagement).

Maybe when I do my turbo I'll pull the engine and have the transmission rebuilt with new synchros and differential clutch.

that might not be the problem tho.

if it sounds like something is spinning and then jamming i doubt its what i said with the axles or half shaft if thats the case, but if it just jams once when you move it either forwards or back then it probably is one of those two things
