I finally got around to changing my shifter and all the related bushings, this is when I found out that the stabilizer bar is held on by 1 bolt going through the floor pan at the shifter side and the rubber around the outer edge of the round part that goes up into the floor is all torn.
Should I just drill another hole on the other side of the hole and use another bolt or is there another, more proper solution to attaching the bar? It's really annoying that the shifter feels really nice and precise going into gear, but still has a ton of side-to-side play.

Re: Shifter stabilizer bar problem
I don't quite understand.. Are the other 3 bolts missing? I thought they were welded to the plate.

						Re: Shifter stabilizer bar problem
What other 3 bolts? As far as I know, the bar is normally held in only by the rubber stuff around it.
I'm talking about this bar:

The one with the round-ish part at the end that the shifter goes into. It's not the square plate bolted to the floor.

Re: Shifter stabilizer bar problem
You're talking about the shift linkage bar? The stabilizer is the one with 4 bolts, that holds the shifter in place, and is bolted to the floor, that also bolts to the tranny to keep equidistance between the shifter, and tranny. Side to side play often comes from the bushing that links the shift linkage bar to the tranny.

Re: Shifter stabilizer bar problem
You're talking about 2 separate pieces as if there were one. There is the plate with 4 bolts that bolts to the floor, but there's also that bar that you talked about, it has a hollow, vertical cylinder with a large bushing all around it at the shifter side, and it slides into the hole in the metal plate. The bushing is all that's holding it in, and when it wears out, it just drops through the floor, taking the shifter with it. The anti-drop bracket just holds the bar in place, but it doesn't look like it prevents side-to-side movementfowljesse wrote:You're talking about the shift linkage bar? I replaced the tranny side stabilizer bushings, it helped a bit.
