Remove paint from plastic?
Remove paint from plastic?
At one point one of the previous owners decided to paint the interior blue and white, now blue is ok, but the white is just nasty. I want to paint everything that's white back to stock black. Problem is that I'm having a hard time removing the paint, I bought a drill-mounted circular brush with thick, strong nylon bristles but it's too slow and screws up the plastic a bit if I'm not careful. Is there an easier way to remove the paint?

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
I tried to remove paint from the plastic front of a computer once. I can't remember if I used nail polish remover or acetone, but I don't recommend either. What will melt paint will also likely melt plastic.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
Couldn't you just put a primer base then paint over that? it would help keep the black looking the same.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
all vinyl parts can be washed down with laquer thinner. That's what they're supposed to be washed with b4 painting in the first place.
Re: Remove paint from plastic?
It's not vinyl, right now I'm repainting the plastic panels in the trunk.RS_OBD'oh_2 wrote:all vinyl parts can be washed down with laquer thinner. That's what they're supposed to be washed with b4 painting in the first place.
I want to remove the paint because it's already dirty and rubbing off in places, so I want an even, strong coat. I don't care if I have to smooth down the texture of the plastic a bit.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
Just sand the panels with maybe 800 to 1000 grit sandpaper. Don't want to be too gritty so you don't sand the grain in the panels. Just enough for everything to smooth out. Then apply an adheisive (spell?) promoter. Then you can apply dye spray paint. If not using a dye and feel to use something like duplicolor paint, apply a primer paint to it first. Actually getting the paint off of plastic might be alittle tough, so like I said, you might want to just sand to a smooth.
Hope I could help you.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
Since I don't seem to have any other choice, I guess I'll just sand it down then. Also, I'm using Krylon Fusion, it's an amazing plastic paint, I used it to paint the fenders of my ATV and it hols up really well.

What for? I'm asking how to remove paint, not how to paint and what to use. I've had very good experiences with Fusion so I'm using it. But since you're so adamant on proving me wrong, explain to me why Fusion is so bad. And I hope you'll use your or others' experience to back up your claims.RS_OBD'oh_2 wrote:I hate this topic. this is the 3rd time this month where someone is using the wrong products and think paint is god in a can.

I've noticed that you respond rudely to everything I say, I don't know if this is how you act normally or if it's just me you hate for some reason, but I sure as hell don't appreciate it.

You'r actually right. You're just asking how to remove paint. You do whatever you think, when you need our help on how to paint it, or what to use, we are here to help. Sorry if you feel he hates you etc... People are not always in the best of moods or you may or may not take things the wrong way. Either way, in his behalf, sorry.Mad Cow wrote:What for? Re: Remove paint from plastic?
You can spray the parts with Bomans decal remover to remove the paint, the problem is methelene chloride is toxic. You can use this produce in a well ventilated area with excellant success. Wet sand the pieces and repaint and you should be good to go.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
Incase you were not aware... I am the res' a$$hole here.
In my defence I've worked in a few paint stores in my younger years. I have over 4 years experience in the industry and have done everything from plastics, metals, house and skateboards. Just so you know, I do not feel as tho I need to justify my thoughts and feelings. I don't BS anyone or give them the wrong info, and it pisses me off when someone asks for advice and does whatever they were told not to anyways.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
Paint has changed alot over the past few years, especially plastic paint. It actually stays on really well now. And I never asked for advice on what to use to paint it.
And what is this bomans decal remover? A google search turns up nothing.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
first option is you scotch brite parts that you will paint and then paint with black that you want to go with.
second option is to buy some paint stripper designed for plastic parts (at auto body supply store) and strip paint off of parts and plastic primer and paint them.
I would suggest first option myself.

Re: Remove paint from plastic?
Bomans is a brand, LOCTITE gasket remover has the same components. Just ask your local paint shop for some methelene chloride in a spray can. I've used it a lot and the paint just says "fu*k it!" and jumps right off the plastic. Just try not to breath the vapours and don't use it in your house.
