Intermediate Shaft Removal Necessary?

Post by bloodred »

I'm just prepping to do a clutch change on my v6 presso.

Can I just confirm if the intermediate shaft first needs to be removed from the gearbox, before the gearbox can be removed from the engine, or if it can just be left in place and the gearbox slid on/off it?

I read a procedure for the ford probe which indicated that it could be left in place, I was wondering if the mx-3 is the same.

Cheers.

Its 3 bolts and little tug, why not just take it out? its one less thing pulling on the transmission when splitting the transmission from the engine?

but on the other hand it shouldn't matter if you leave it in place just don't mess up the splines on it when putting the transmission back on the engine.

When I removed/reinstalled my transmission, I just unbolted the intermediate shaft from the block and left the splined end in the transmission the whole time. This also helps to make sure the spider gears don't fall.

ElectricEnergy, thank you, that sounds like a good plan r.e. the spider gears. So i take it one just pops the inner CV off the intermediate shaft? is this just C-clipped on too?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't know if you can even get the bearing on its own without the shaft. I just replaced the entire intermediate shaft on mine. Don't buy it new though, its like $350.

Ok I got a bearing price, $65 bucks not bad. 93-94 are 3 bolt and after that are suppose to be 2 bolt.
