day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
and i finally got a 1 1/4" socket so i can take off the axle nut/ hub nut. however, when i spin it, it just causes the damned shaft to spin too. how can i prevent the cv shaft from spinning whilst i turn the hub nut? yes, i do have the engine in gear, but that doesnt seem to stop it.
should i put the radiator hose back on, so i can turn the engine on, so i can use my brakes?

Re: day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
lol, terrible Idea.
don't turn the engine on....just get a friend to press on the brakes when you work on it.
the brakes will still work with the engine off, the pedal will just be more stiff.
on a side note, you will need an impact to get the nut off. It is on with like 500ft/lbs of torque.
good luck.

ah, ok i wasn't sure whether the brakes would still work. yea, s---... i might need an impact. this is the first time i have _ever_ done this. im basically just doing everything by sight. are there any special tools i might need along the way? cause all i have is sockets and wrenches.

Re: day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
You don't need to remove the axles from the spindles to get the transmission out.
Unbolt the lower ball joint from the control arm and have a friend GENTLY pull the hub assembly out while you pry the cv joint from the differential. It will easily clear the diff housing. Then carry on with transmission removal. You'll still have to remove the crossmember, but the axles should not be in the way.

one more thing, would anyone here have AIM , and not mind my IMing them for further help? its just a lil bit easier talking that way, as opposed to threads.
Re: day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
I just tired to remove my axel nuts. The drivers side one was ok but the passenger side well. We has a three foot 1" drive bar with a 3 foot extension on it and the nut won't budge. I think I'll have to chizel it off. Good luck with your's.

ok so i took the advice on disconnecting the control arm, and that went ok.
however, now i cant pry the shaft out of the differential. i am using a pry bar. i stick it behind the joint and try to push it but i cant get enough room or anything. any tips? should i buy a pickle fork? what if i just take the boot off of the joint, and leave the joint on the tranny when i drop it?

Re: day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
You are not the first guy to have had this problem. There's no easy answer. Those little clips that hold them in can be tenacious. Try rotating the shaft as you pry with the prybar. If you can get one CV joint out of the diff you can put a long punch through the diff and drive the other out from that side....VERY CAREFULLY!!! If you mess up the spider gears...well just don't mess up the spider gears.
This is one of those things that's just frustrating.

Re: day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
yea your not alone dude...my last axle i just pulled out with my hand and hamerd the new one in. Unfortunitly i must have dameged the seal in between the axle and tranny so now im tryin to pull it back out. The shity thing about it is i cant seem to get it back out! I've tryed everything except going threw the tranny. Once i get it out ill tell you how i did it. Most likly i wont be going threw the other side becasue i know basically 0 about transmissions.

Re: day 3 on trying to replace my clutch
I got it out with a screw driver hitting the axle from the other side. Carefull not to damage the diff!!
