interfering or non-interfering engine??

Post by novaks »

I called a mechanic the tow truck driver recommended to take the car in tomorrow morning and the mechanic suggested my timing belt broke. Basically I just lost power when driving, but unfortunately I didn't know that cranking the engine after break down might have cause valve damage.

So are these engine non-interfering or did I wreck my engine?

93 mx-3 1.8 v6 stock engine. Someone told me if my timing belt broke and I cranked the engine over, I would've known it was the timing belt on an interfering engine (I guess by the sound).

Cranking over sounded normal.

Thank you and please reply soon. I've never been to this mechanic so I don't want him to say my valves are gone if that's not the case

EDIT: Sorry...found my answer by searching and found my older post mentioning the RS and GS are non-interfering which is very good. So now if the mechanic tries to hit me up for valve repair i'll have someone else work on the car. ty

ya, probably. We are lucky that ours aren't Int-fit.

maybe that's why mazda stopped making the vulnerable mx-3? :(

All Mazda engines that have a 19mm oil drain bolt and Timing belt are ALL non-interference engines.

All you need is a towing and a belt in case of breakin' timing belt.

I don't know why they do it, but my guess is that by limiting the space above the piston at tdc you can raise the compression higher getting you more power out of a smaller displacement/engine. It's probably a carry over from diesel engines which feed on the higher compression.

At first i thaught it was an interferrence engine. Seeing as how many belt suppliers at my work including DAYCO all say that the mx-3 is an interference engine. specifically the v6. Now that im getting older and wiser i realize all these stupid mistakes people are getting paid for and are publishing into corporational books.

I would say the KL's are DEFINITELY interfering... to my sanity.

Other than that, I also had the belt break on me in the worst possible manner. I WOULD say that it didn't harm the engine, but it was a catalyst to EXTREMELY bad luck.

So if you break a belt, you're not risking valve damage, just EXTREMELY bad luck.
