Basically it holds it in the gear that your in. So if you put it in D (3), it wouldn't go into 4th. Same goes with the other gears just replace the numbers. And now for my ctrl + V finish. Hopefully i explained it.
When Hold Control is selected in the “D
position, the transmission is held in 3rd
gear, which locks out overdrive (4th
gear) and provides additional torque and
responsiveness at most higher speeds.
This allows for engine braking during
higher speed descents and decelerations.
It also reduces/eliminates wheelspin
when starting out on snow or ice.
Similarly, if Hold Control is selected in
the “2 position, the transmission will
start in 2nd gear (instead of 1st), helping
reduce wheelspin when starting out on
slippery surfaces.
Note: Since placing Hold Control in the
“D position locks the transmission in
3rd gear and prevents downshifts to
2nd or 1st gear, acceleration from a
standstill or near standstill on dry pavement
will be slower than expected. Hold
Control should be deselected during
these situations.
To set the Hold mode:
1. Place the shift lever in the gear range
you want to hold.
2. Press the HOLD button located on
the shift lever console. (The HOLD
indicator light on the Secondary
Information Center will illuminate.)
Press the button again to turn off the
Hold mode and return to normal
automatic transaxle operation.

Its to lock up the torque converter. with hold in it will actually shift threw two gears. hold is intended for passing people, going up a steep hill where the car feels really gutless, towing(we really dont need to worrie about that) and if you like to rod on it you can push the hold butting in, and beet the piss out of the auto trans and manually shift the grears till the thing blows so you can do a manual trans swap

Re: what does hold do
DONE FROM STANDSTILL
Well, how about this. Just for fun. Gear in L, then engage HOLD. Stomp the gas, hit about 6500-6900 RPM, dis-engage HOLD. Wait for about 5700-6200 RPM, shift to S. Then 5500 RPM and shift to D. I found it pretty cool! anyone else have any little driving techniques?
Chris
NOTE: RPM's may differ. I don't want to FULLY blow out my rings or valve seals. It burns enough oil already.
