Found a 1996 MX-3 6cyl for $7000

Post by raybernard »

Hey guys

Havn't been on here for a long time since I bought my 94 MX-3 4cyl LEMON. Everything went wrong with this car and I ended up donating it to the kidney foundation after spending 1000s trying to fix it.

I found a 96 MX-3 at a dealership with 144k on it and they supposedly supply 1yr warranty as well.

I am scared to buy this car and was just wondering if you guys thought it was worth it? What problems should I get checked out before I make a decision. I always thought Mazdas last forever when taken care of properly but my other car scared me off.

Oh BTW I will be buying this car and TOTALLY pimping it out... it's NOT just a daily driver. I'm looking on ebay and can't find many parts for 96 MX3... but lots for earlier years. Are the 96 models so much different??

Any help is appreciated!!

If your planning serious modding.. you should check the car out closely and find out if its a OBDI or OBDII car. Modding a OBDII car will be much more difficult than a OBDI car. Since this car is a 96.. the odds of it being OBDII are very high.. probably around a 80% chance or higher. Also.. if your planning on modding the car.. why bother buying one thats that expensive? Buy a cheap one and build it up from there.. you can save $5000 and use it to mod the car.

For me that's easier said than done. This is what I tried the last time and got a lemon. I don't wanna lose a ton of money buying a shitty car. Should there be something to look for or just take it to a mechanic if I buy it privately?

What's your experience on how long these vehicles last?

these are great cars if taken care of, i have had 8 of them in the last 2 years. just bought a 92 to sell redid the whole interior, suspension, exhaust and got the motor running like new and im selling it for 4200.00, which is a good deal around here. bloody thing runs better than my own project car that ive spent 5 times that. so if you look over everything really well you should not have a problem.

Yea that's what I need. A friend like you who I can pay to keep my ride in top shape. I don't have the time nor the skills to do it myself.

i bought my 93 RS for 900 bucks at a junkyard, sure i had to put a little work into it, but it didn't cost me over that to get it running into a very relable car. all-in-all, i spent about 500 or so for all the parts and now it runs very strong. 7000 is a bit much in my opinion.

well in western canada they still are very expensive, even worse in bc. i still see mx3's on car lots for up 12,000. i would buy a 92-93 just due to the odb1 set up, just easier to work with if you doing any performance/engine work.

Then why are you doing it? Working on cars is supposed to be a hobby. You need either the time to learn or the skills to work; without either there is no point. I can respect show value for flaunting money, such as buying a Vette or a Porsche, but buying a car and having someone else "pimp it out" for you is just plain retarded.

OBD1 all the way.. my mx3 gave me TONS of problems.. but already replaced the susp(most) basically the whole front clip and walla car runs like new. I need to work on the back parts tho :/ wow 7000 .. has 1 year warranty tho.. v6 came out very reliable and if it dies give it some klze.

$7000 for a MX-3 is rather high....My 93 was selling for 3,000 at a run down dealership..it had been rolled by the previous owner and has dents on the roof, broken transmission, a purple hood (the car is green..so ghetto lol) and 280,000K on it. I talked the guy down to $900, took the car home put in another tranny for $150 and changed all the parts from my previous 95MX3. If your going to pimp it out, get a cheaper one for sure!! if you take care of it the car will run, mine is at 315,000K's and STILL running.... :D

I guarantee that guy selling his car would FLIP if you offered 7k for it. Seriously, you prolly shouldn't consider more than 3-4k.

Buy mine, and just get it shipped ;), I got a post in the FS section. If they go for that much out west I might just take it with me when I go.
