new carpet

Post by falk aspargs »

I just recently bought a roll of black floor carpeting that I want to use to replace my tan carpeting I have in my 93 MX-3. I checked the the Appearance FAQ and saw nothing. I did find a site that tells you how to put in new carpet, and was wondering if there is anything different I have to do to install it in my car. Here is the website I found.

Auto carpet is formed to the contours of the floor pan. A roll of carpet will not work. A quote from the site you posted "made for your specific vehicle". There are many places that make replacement molded MX3 carpet. Some will have most of the carpet precut to fit and some oversize the carpet and let you trim it, but the basic shape is the same. None of the replacment carpets drop right in. They will all need some adjustment and the addition of any stock hooks, clips and holes cut to aloow bolts to pass through the carpet. So you need to remove all the parts that are not carpet from your stock carpet and move them over to the new carpet. It took me about 3 afternoons to replace mine. I used sand bags to weigh the corners down and make them fit better to the corners. Weight and heat will help the carpet lay down faster (sand bags and summer heat are fine). Or, you can install it and let the saggy spots fall on their own.
A fun job IMO as it was detail oriented and a first for me. I bought mine from automotiveinteriors.com who was the lowest price and a good company. Speak with Diane if you have any questions.

i got mine from 1aauto and it fit really good, but needed quite a bit of trimming. i got mine done in an afternoon, but didn't do the whole sandbag thing (good idea now that i think of it). anyways, here's the links to both 1aauto and automotive interiors. seems like both are the 2 piece and pat's is quite cheaper. :x

2 piece in that the passanger compartment (front and rear seat floorboard is one piece and the trunk is one piece) from auto interiors. Did need alot of trimming, but I would rather that than not enough carpet.
