strange electrical oddity - all lights out!

Post by Badam »

I haven't had the chance to investigate the car (I'll wait until morning for the light) - but my '93 GS is acting badly.

Open the door - interior light turns on, brake lights work, turn the key, all the idiot lights come up, turn the rest of the way for the starter - and all the lights go out - all dead. This can't be good.

I went back two hours later, and things had reset, interior lights etc. etc. then turn the key and NOTHING ... everything is out - ERRIE BLACKNESS

I just drove 150 miles yesterday - and then did two spirited drives today, 20 miles each way in the mountains. I drive the 1.5 mile rutty dirt road in and out of my place at a fair clip - so all that bouncing around may not be helping. Hmmm.

A month ago, I had a VERY strange electrical oddity - where suddenly while driving I noticed that the electric windows didn't work, and the sunroof didn't work. Turn the car off, (5 second wait maybe) then restart and it all works. That happened at least twice, maybe three times.

Does any of this sound familiar?

Thought I'd post this now, in case anyone has any bright ideas(hahahahaha) overnight. Of course I'll be poking around the fuses and the main once it's light out. But since it is resetting itself ... I dunno ...

Wierd.... I wouldn't have a clue. Maybe the ground wires are being ratteled loose, but I doubt it since it seems to be cutting different circuits.

Well I feel pretty dumb about bugging the list before taking 10 seconds to go under the hood and check the obvious stuff first (it was late and I was beat) but ... [dramatic pause] it turns out that the POSITIVE terminal had worked itself loose. I'd tightened it myself when I put red/green battery donuts on there, 12 months and 10,000 miles ago. Guess it takes that long and that many bouncy trips going down my dirt road to get it to let go - LOL.

And, I noticed that the battery hold-down isn't there ... possibly it wasn't there when I bought it - not really sure. In looking at my '94 (that is getting the big K 2.5), that seems to be different than the '93 as far as a hold-down. I'll fashion one, unless someone has an extra one laying around ... ???

Adam.

ps. remember ... 'wierd' is spelled weirdly (e before i)
