"Sliding Shaft Sounds" When Turning

Post by illapino »

not only do i have a nail in my rear driver's Falken tire, but i recently got an wheel alignment (that couldn't adjust the camber) and now i notice a slight, but new, noise when turning. it's the sound as if something like a long pole under the car, between the front wheels, is "shuffling" or "crooked creaking", affected by perhaps the sideways force exerted against the car's direction of turn, if you know what i mean (physics) ... i want to be concerned, what is it and what should i do? no matter how small the noise is, i know when my baby is in pain ...

i didn't have an alignment for a couple months after lowering the vehicle. . new struts, new coilovers, new tie-rod end links: the sound only came about after the wheel alignment.

Sounds like it could possibly your axles, which i would recomend fixing them sooner then later.

could be the outer CV joints on the driveshaft. when the CV boot cracks dirt and moisture get into the joint and they start making cracking sounds when you turn and accelerate at the same time. I just replaced mine recently, simple enough job and only cost around €100 for both joints.

If its not that it could be your steering rack

Does this noise happen at any/all speeds when turning or just very low "parking lot" driving speed? Does it happen when turning in either direction or just one side vs the other?

You can usually get away with a fair amount of time before replacing a CV joint/half-axle once it starts making noise. At least a few thousand+ miles of driving from my own experience. However, you are using coilovers now so depending on how big your drop was from stock height, the lower the drop = the greater the stresses on the CV joints.

Had same problem...

I had the same problem. I took off the front wheels, and ripped out the heat shields. Turns out, they were scraping against the inside of the rim. Oddly enough, I could only hear it at very low speeds (0-5km/h) and while turning. Cold weather made it worse too.

Easy fix!
