Where to find a V6 MTX?

Post by ktmrider »

Sorry for posting here but I cannot use the FS/WTB area yet.
My brother has most probably destroyed the tranny case and clutch in the 93 GS ( oil leak, shredded pressure plate ). I have been searching for an MTX tranny with absolutely no luck, including eBay.
My search forays have yielded this so far:
- short of the final drive gearing anything from an MX6 or Probe GT will fit
- LSD is not really required unless I drag or boost the piss out of it
- 4 cyl bellhousing is not compatible
- Fidanza flywheel is very light and strong
I am very close to making it a complete KLZE swap but don't want to let my brother drive it afterward. For now any suggestions on locating a tranny is greatly appreciated!

Go to ProbeTalk.com ..... find people who've posted on the New Mexico Probe Owners Club and private message them asking if they know where to get a V6 transmission.

Thanks, I did just that. At least I was able to help them with the final drive ratio differences over there, some are looking at the MX-3 tranny for 1/4 mile time improvements.
Any other suggestions are welcome!

Not sure what a used MX6/626, Probe GT tranny would go for at one of your local wreckers. I would probably assume that it wouldn't be really cheap. There may be another alternative. Many engine importers get the complete engine with tranny when they import them. It may be worth to investigate an engine importer that's close to you and see if they have any ZE engines in stock that have manual tranny's on them. It may be a few bucks more than the auto wreckers tranny's but at least you've got a tranny that's got a hell of a lot less miles on it and should be a little more trustworthy/reliable than the possible wreckers crapshoot. Just an idea.

Yeah, I had not gone that route yet but it sounds like the better of the choices.
I did find a website, http://car-parts.com , that has a TON of used MX-3 trannies listed. Cheapest one was $250 up to $1000 US.
The more I look the better the complete KLZE with tranny looks

Update

Post by ktmrider »

Long overdue update.
Found a tranny using http://www.car-parts.com out of Utah. The parental units happened to be near STL visiting my sister and driving their truck. $200 got us a very good tranny. The website also scored us a near new condition stock flywheel for $60 shipped.
A few days later the car was resurrected! Drove it around town for a shakedown run ( not calling it break in period ) plus 90 miles on the highway to deliver back to my brother ( so far 5 months clean!! ).
Total bill one MTX tranny, flywheel, clutch kit, fluids, and numerous cuss words. I could not bear to put it out to pasture/salvage but dang near did. Hard to work on stuff and front cash for damage you did not do....

The mx-3 tranny is the same 4.38:1 ratio as the Probe tranny, it's the Mx-6/626 with the longer gears @ 4.11:1

Dude, you are 38 and let you brother tear up your car without paying for it. Wuss, beat the crap from him and make him do Something to pay you back! Sad story and I know about irresponsible family, but I figured out their lack of respect for others propery way before I ever leant my car to them.

Yeah, don't let anyone tell you MJ is not a gateway or recreational drug! Led my bro to a meth addiction that so far ( 10 months ) has not resurfaced. That, a new nephew, the fact I got the car free, and our folks fronted most of the repair cash got it resurrected. I and my entire family wanted to beat the crap out of him for the last 15 years but seeing a blood relative living in an alley, begging for food, and losing 130 lbs takes the fight out of ya real quick.
The car is still chugging away, I'm impressed by how well the motor still runs after his and the previous owner's neglect. Tough little car.
