just jumped into mx-3s...got a black 94 DOHC 1.6L 4cyl, Auto with "hold" feature...and a 92 GS DOHC 1.8L 6cyl.........the 92 is more of a project so lets forget it for now

The 94's motor smokes BAD, but came with a motor on a pallet...supposed to be a 30.000 mile japanese one........it is a Ford motor.....i know mazda made these for ford and they were in such cars as a Ford Laser, Mercury Capri...and a couple others...just with a different intake/exhaust and timing cover/valve cover set-up...my question is this.....how can i tell what engine i am about to put in....ie horspower specs...other details about internals....Both the new one and the one coming out are marked in the tab by the starter as a B6.....as i try to find parts (very dificultly) some places say its a B6-ZE...others a B6D...and some websites are calling it a B6-P..or a B6-DE........

what do i have?.........i have a digital camera and can take pics of anywhere specific on Either engine...dont really know how to post them but i can photobucket them.....

any help or links would be super cool.... i have done A LOT of research on this and im just stumped

Stock for the 94 is a B6DE and likely if the motor on the pallet is a 1.6L and DOHC setup for FWD.. its probably a B6DE as well. B6ZE engines came in JDM cars and Miatas and most (if not all) were setup for RWD applications at least to my knowledge. However.. since its a ford engine.. its likely to be a BP engine. Which is a 1.8L and came in some escorts & proteges. The engine in the GS is a K8.

Funny really.. I saw the ad you responded to on Craigslist in the portland area.. a bit too far away for me to respond to.. How much did you get the package for if you dont mind me asking? :) Oh yeah and welcome to the board :)

actually i traded an 86 toyota tercel wagon for the package.....i had done a GREAT DEAL of work to it....pretty much everything you could do to something you planned to drive forever...but it just wasnt powerful enough..nor did it have a 4th gear automatic for the girlfriend to drive..(terc was hers...so she gets the black auto 4cyl...and i get the 6 cyl 5spd GS for the labor i have done to the tercel and the black one, she supplies money for parts).........these cars needed A LOT of going over...but with the help of local wrecking yards, the GS is getting a new interior..and the black one....is it correct to assume this may be an RS?......gets some interior, a fender, door and front bumper, plus the engine.....(ill have to get a different engine for the GS...maybe a kl-ze swap, but i did find a K8 up here for $400, complete 140,000 miles).......

far as the engine....the one pulled out...b6DE...cool...glad to be sure... i had suspected as much

so the B6 ZE is mostly meant for RWD cars?...not really a FWD application


one going in....came wrapped on the pallet with ALL accessories so i have a good possibility of finding out what it came from without using engine coding (though if anyone has info on block or cylinder head casting codes i would LOVE to read it).....looking at pics of various Fords that came with these engines, i can see that the capri has a different type if intake, it comes over the top of the valve cover, the one i have looks remarkably like an Escort GT with the driver side intake..but the engine code stamped on the tab under the starter would be BP if it were from an escort right? (escort having the 1.8l not the 1.6l)...but what about the japanese market...this was supposed to be a 30k jap import...what Ford in the japanese market has the DOHC 4 cyl stamped with the B6....laser? Meteor?...havent seen any underhood pics yet..ill look more, but they seem to be rare........code cast into front of cyl head reads B6S7-1....ill be using the original mazda externals..intake, exhaust fuel rail, dist, etc since the wiring wont switch....but things like the injectors have the same nippon denso number in the side and are in better condition so i want to use them......i guess its mostly just for novelty info, but i would really love to know just what the rated HP and model of car the Ford engine orignally was.....also want to know if the HP will increase or decrease with the mazda intake and such over the ford stuff...but have to know what i have first......

lots of info to ask...i know.....now you know what i have been trying to sift through and figure out....its rough

Might want to start by digesting the information in the FAQ sections. For both cars. A lot of that info may already be there and then some. And yes the 4cyl ones are the RS models and the GS are the V6's.

As for Ford in Japan? Eh.. probably very unlikely.. Thing is.. the BP is a mazda engine.. Ford just put them in their cars.. So while its possible that its a JDM ford engine I suppose.. its probably VERY unlikely. However.. the BP is a nice power upgrade over the B6DE and will probably net you around 95Whp with the ATX. You will likely need the tranny mount bracket if they didnt include it.. you may also need the ECU from a BP powered car.. if they didnt include one.

You can find all this info around the site though.. I know you have a lot to sift through.. but the information is already around. Ariesdude has done the BP engine swap with the ATX tranny (most people swap with a MTX car)

no.. i think you misunderstood.,....my question is ..how do i tell what engines i already have?..... they are both marked "B6"....niether one can be a "BP" if its marked "B6"...correct?...wouldn't it be marked something like "B8" if it were a "BP"?......

now assuming this Pallet motor is pretty much an exact match for the B6-DE, but from a japanese market Ford, what Ford can it be from?....what NON-American-market Ford (or Mercury i suppose) uses a B6-DE? (exhaust and intake ports are same, but crank timing belt pulley and woodruff key/balancer/pulley are different than each other, have to use the ford balancer/pulley, water pump pulley, and alternator (its a V-belt, not multi groove)....but i can use the original mazda intake/exhaust).........reason i ask is that some of the parts ARE different and for instance when i go to buy a new alternator belt, i cant find one looking up a mazda MX-3...What do I look up?........also.. are the horspower specs the same?...pistons, valves, cam lobes?......am i going to put a lesser engine in...or will it be better because its J-spec?....or the exact same because im using the stock mazda intake and injectors and such?.....can anyone post a link to some engine casting code lists?....

Where in PDX are you? I looked at those two cars...seemed like too much work for me...with my other projects. I could swing by and help identify everything. I really didnt take a good look at the mottor on the pallet.
