Actually.. they are the same timing belt.. I bought one of the e-bay kits for the probe/mx6 DE engines and it fit just fine on my K8. The belt & pulleys are all the same for the K series engines.

Why ??? lol 45 bucks gets you a brand new one, i mean if you drove like 1000k maybe keep it but why not just buy a new oneillapino wrote:i have a k8 right now
is it okay if i replace the timing belt on it and swap it onto the klze when i get one? all i need to keep in mind is the kilometres the belt's been driven altogether on both motors right?
oh, and still no metal idlers. i can't find them. mazda dealership's are all plastic... where do u get steel
(Oh yea thanks everyone i thought the k series motor was one of those that killed it self when the timing belt went)
I still cant find anywhere in the shop manual where it says there should be a 1in hole in the side of the block. (Blown K8) #6 rod thrown through block.
by "timing belt" i don't just mean the timing belt. I mean the pulleys, the idlers, the idler pulleys, etc etc etc. altogether it runs up to about $800 minus labor; in another topic, i even compiled a list of the whole quote i received from Mazda... $800 in parts for the whole timing system is what i'm talking about!
this ain't a game, noob. this ain't a game.

Just buy one of the $100 kits on e-bay then buy the metal idler pulleys from Mazda if you really need them. Or you could take your metal pulleys and have new bearings pressed into them. Dunno how much that would cost or where you would get it done right off though.

Heck.. here is a kit from e-bay that even includes a new waterpump and seal.. its a 32mm type pump though.. so you want to pay attention to where the pulley mounts to the pump. Some are 16mm some are 32mm. $130 US.
And while the plastic pulleys arent the best.. if you are just using your car as typical daily driver stuff.. they would be fine. If you are using a ZE or are building a turbo DE.. I definately wouldnt use them. But for a stock K8.. they would be fine.

*Edit* And yes this will fit your K8 even though its not listed. I have installed the same kit (minus the water pump) on my K8 so I KNOW it will work.

Metal metal = Jspec.

Thats not true Kiwi.. I have metal ones in my stock K8. I suppose its possible that they were installed at the same time the original timing belt was changed and are not the originals (bearings are still tight so I reused them) But I know I dont have a Jspec K8
My guess is that sometime during production.. Mazda switched to the plastic ones. Meaning you could find either metal or plastic ones in any given USDM (or CAN) K8 or KLDE. Same thing would apply to parts on the shelf.. early in production of parts for the aftermarket.. metal pulleys would have been produced as OEM replacement parts. When the manufacturers switched to plastic pulleys.. the plastic ones are what started showing up on part stores shelves.. as all the extra metal ones got bought.. since they werent produced any more they were replaced with the plastic ones. Meaning you might still be able to find metal ones in locations where the cars are relatively rare. Call a Napa in Idaho and see if they have any on the shelf. (Believe it or not.. thats how I found a K&N air filter that was out of production for my old Subaru XT)

and some of these motors are 97-98 vintage, all are Jspec as we do
not have local assembly like the states.
Once again this seems to be a localised thing to the States and Canada
like the LSD Drive shaft CV issue.
