Raised Center Console and Sporty Dashboard

Post by illapino »

out of many, the toyota supra and acura nsx have nice dashes, raised center console, perfect for the shift mechanism and human right arms; the console creating a half-wall between driver and passenger, with the passenger himself having a sleek glove compartment to take his shoes off under.

u and i love it.

any ideas on how one can custom assemble one for the mx-3? i wanna completely revamp the interior with similar dash and center. of course the door panels would also have to be modified to merge with this new dash when the doors close, but i took apart most of my console and a door panel and they are nothing but hollow plastic = couldn't be that hard to create if one knew someone special.

main concern is, if the center console of the mx-3 were raised, how about the shift mechanism that grows out of the floor? i'm thinking that the shift mechanism would have to be moved in accordance which would be one fcuk of a job to do as there are two "rods" running under the car into the transmission which i doubt can be repositioned at any different height since i'm assuming they're supposed to be perfectly parallel to the tranny-house they run into.

another concern is how thin of a space there is between our front seats: even the center compartment is hardly a compartment ...

any ideas?

ummm the reason that the shifter is so high in that car is because the transmission and driveshaft sit RIGHT under it.

In the MX-3, the transmission is in the front of the car... and sits pretty low. So, this is pretty much foolish to try in the MX-3.

If you DID do that in the MX-3, then the extended Shifter would be RIDICULOUSLY tall and have such a long throw, that the opening for the shifter would have to be the size of a dinner plate.

I dont think that would look too good in the MX-3.

I agree that it would look like crap, but I know what you mean, my brother had 2 talons (eclipses) and the shifter is bsically inline with the armrest higher up, it was nice but it olny looks good in certain cars. I think the supra dash is ugly IMO, the FD rx7 dash is nice though

I think it is easily one of the best styles out there. Even if you think it is ugly, the functionality is great. I drove one a while back and it feels like sitting in a cockpit, everything wraps around so that it faces you directly.

possibly if you had an automatic (ever seen the dash-mounted shifter in the MS8?)

lol! rather than increase the height of the shifter, perhaps you could decrease the height of your seat? weld a racing seat to your floor!

i agree with solo...., the FD has an awesome cockpit, i think the Supra is a lil overdone (shrug)

Yeah. The reason like the Talon can do that is because the seating position is lower in the tub ..... not so much that the arm rest/shifter is that high. In the Talon, your feet are straight out when you sit, whereas in the MX3 you're a little more upright.

i think you could do that and keep the stock shifter height... it would probably not stick up more than a couple of inches above the center counsole but might look nice
