Temperature guage problem

Temperature guage problem
So a little while ago my temp guage was acting up. All of a sudden it would go from just below half and shoot to the H line at the top, then drop back down. So first I changed the temp guage on the motor. No luck. So I did the head gasket. Still continued, it just took a while to come back. Water pump and timing belt were also changed at the same time as the headgasket. The headgasket was only minorly gone, and the head was machined because it was slightly warped. So next thing changed in an attempt to solve this weird problem was the rad. Still happening. The only thing left that I can think of is that there is a small crack in the block, or the guage within the cluster is malfunctioning. Anyone know what this might be? Any similar problems and resolutions? Any help would be great thanks.

For DOHC there are 2 temparature sensors - one for the ECU and one for the Temparature Gauge.
For SOHC there is a third temparature sensor for the rad fan i think.
Which one did you change?

Yeah i agree with ariesdude. one of those sensors is soley for you temp gauge, you may have changed the wrong one. Also there is a chance the problem could be in your gauge cluster. i had the same problem with my aftermarket temp gauge turned out to be a loose signal wire. good luck.

The guage I changed connects directly to the head, where the coolant flows into the motor. Not sure if this makes sense or not. Anyone have pics of the other ones you're talking about? And thanks to everyone for the help.

Here are the 3 temp sensors for SOHC - if you click on the "more info" link - you can get pictures of the sensors - but i dont know where they go on the engine. You can probably try autozone's "component location" function.

The gauge sensor mounts to the cylinder head - a single wire. The fan sensor mounts to the thermostat housing - a single wire. The ECU thermo sensor mounts to the intake manifold - a 2-wire sensor. Your problem sounds like a sticking thermostat - it's not opening at 180 deg, but more like 200 deg F. Have you changed it?
