BOSTON ACOUSTICS?

Post by jrors »

I have Boston Acoustics installed in the front and rear and the sound quality as far as highs and midrange is concerned is incredible. However, I'm also thinking about getting a 12 inch sub of the same brand. Has anyone here had any experince with their subs as far as overall quality is concerned? Please let me know before I sink almost $400 in just 1 of their 12" subs.

Thanks fellas!

OOooo, I love to rave about Boston Acoustics. I have fronts and rear mid/high Bostons, and two 12.5 subs (competition). However they are so crisp and loud that I only use one sub. I push all my speakers with JL amps. The sub gets 500 watts alone. The sub boxes are easy to make. I have a design for a square 1 cubic foot box that is almost perfect (about 1,000th of an inch off of exactly 1 cubic foot)
If you need the design to build a box from let me know. I can fax it to you. Sorry, no email since it is a drawing and I don't have a scanner.

I love me some Boston Acoustics!!

Thanks for the reply Patdiesel. I'ld like to take you up on your offer to fax the info to me, but, I have no fax machine,(bummer)! Yeah Pat, those B.A.'s sound darn good on the highs and midrange. I went to a place called CarFi in town and the rep there kept telling me that even though I was I was interested in getting some Alpine speakers or Cerwin Vegas, I should really listen to the Boston Acoustics he also sells there. I was completely suprised at how well those speakers sounded! I mean the sound quality pumping out of those speakers was completely detailed..........it sounded as if the person singing was standing right next to me live on stage. And the highs? Dead on the money. The midrange and highs coming from the B.A.'s sounded better than my mothers Bose system in her 2001 Acura TL and better than the Bose system she has installed across the ceiling in her entertainment room at home.
I'll go with the B.A. sub then. It'll be a great match to the system.

Thanks

I've always liked B.A. Even convinced 3 co-workers 20 years ago when they were building their home stereos to go for the B.A.'s. They were never disatisfied. To this day one of them still uses those speakers without any complaints. Ten years ago when i got the MX, one of my first orders of business was to get a good sound system. That included the idea of B.A.'s. As it turned out, it was a toss-up between B.A. components and SoundStream components - the SoundStream won. That's not to say any less of the B.A.'s. To this day, they'd still be at the top of my list. Additionally, I almost opted for a B.A. complete 5.1 surround system for my home theatre although I ended up with a Paradigm speaker system that was better suited to my NAD reciever. end of my 2 cents .....

Yeah. The B.A. seems to get alot of respect from people that have heard them before jschrauwen. A co-worker that hasn't had the chance to hear them playing in my car yet, once asked me what brand of speakers I have in my ride. As soon as I said Boston Acoustics in the fromt and back, he said "Oooooh, you've got a nice set up, I know all about how good they sound." Looks like the CarFi rep was right on the money when he suggested them to me.

I love my B.A system, the 2 12.5 subs and the pro 6.5 in front and rear. Sound quality/clearity is amazing. I love it wouldn't go any other way. I had Mb Quartz and I sitll think this was the right choice to go to B.A

Yeah BoOdOg, The B.A.'s are nice. I also had MB Quartz when I had my 1991 Honda Prelude Si. MB's in the rear and JBL components up front. That was a nice set up I had in there. But the B.A.'s seem to out perform them in clarity none the less

I cannot find my sub box design <hangs head> it took me forever to get it that close too.

Another member offered to post it in a digital format if I'd send him the fax, but I couldn't find it....

Thanks Andrew for the offer to help the community.

I don't know where it could have gotten off to. I keep ALL my MX-3 stuff in one file folder in a filing cabinet with all my other papers. I honestly must have about 3-400 pages of reciepts, ideas, stickers from parts, brochures for parts I want or wanted and bought, the title, sales sticker, 150 point inspection results on the car before I bought it, I mean EVERYTHING.

Hope my box never breaks or starts to leak air or I'm going to need to get out the tape measure and calculator and start all over again.

Anyway, you don't need to be that exact anyway. 1 cubic foot give or take a inch of air space is fine. Make sure to include traingular braces on the bottom of the box to help keep the sides inline when the bass hits. Also remove air space from your calculation for the triangle braces. Use 3/4 MDF to build the box of course and fill it half way with polyfill before you install the speaker in the box. (polyfill is stuffed bear stuffing, get it at Wal-Mart). Glue all connecting sides with wood glue and then seal all joints with silicone from the front and back of the joint. Let it dry for 24 hours before installing the speaker. I know it will be hard not to install it and listen to it, but do it or the speaker will blow any silicone out of the joints and leak air.

Make sure to use the gasket that comes with the speaker to ensure a good fit and be precise when cutting the speaker hole in the box. They sell larger compasses at Home Depot for contractors to mark large perfect circles. They work well with large speaker cut-outs too

Good luck.

So, are there any other MXers here that ride around bumping Boston Acoutics besides our fellow MXers that have posted?

I'd put my one Boston 12 against your 2 JLs anyday...

Not that JL is a bad brand, but if you like the Boston mids/highs then you should hear a properly set-up Boston sub
