Just got back from tranny shop and...GRR

Post by bushidosword »

After a drawn out circus act of a 9 day (automatic) rebuild, I got my car back last night. Seems tho, that there was an O ring and clip missing from the spring loaded "valve" on the front side of the tranny. After losing alot of fluid I noticed something was up...Anyway towed it back to the shop (their cost not mine) They replaced the O ring and clip. No more leak.

MY QUESTION: Now I have a flashing hold light, so I know that its throwing a code, the fluid level is bang on, and the code seems to throw at merge or highway speed. Is this normal after a rebuild, as in it needs time for the computer to adjust, or should I be concerned? I have made arrangements to have the code pulled next week but between now and then I have several out of town obligations, and I want to know if I should not be driving that much.

Your advice and time is (as always) much appreciated!

-Andrew

You can try resetting the computer - which wont take more than a minute - but then again pulling the code only takes 2-3 minutes i think ....

Also do you have a tranny cooler? it might be overheating at high speeds....

Or the wrong type of fluid is in there causing some fault at high speeds ...

When i first checked tranny fluid i made the mistake of not having the engine running - you have to have the engine warmed up to some level and the tranny should have been put in all the available gear options (P,N,D,S,L) and then you should put it in "P" and then check the level (with engine still running). Check the manual for the complete procedure.

Fluid is fine, and the right kind : checked it running and I do have a cooler. Before the rebuild it never flashed untill the transmission completely went south.

The rebuild was 2000 after tax, which included a new differential, and a cooler.

PS DO NOT take it to Mr Transmission....

Anyone else have theirs rebuilt? Did urs flash afterwards?

Thanks again!

reset the ecu, if hold light still flashes, check auto codes, otherwise go for a drive...., if still no flashing hold light, you're sweet!

the procedure for checking codes is in the manual, from memory it is something like.....

RESET ECU
disconnect battery
depress brake pedal (10secs)
reconnect battery
switch on ignition

check if hold light flashes

CHECK AUTO CODES
disconnect battery
depress brake
use a paper clip to jump GND & AT
switch on ign
note hold light sequence

anyways..., all this is in the online manual!

they are located in the diagnostic box just between the battery and the firewall.
