air flow meter?

Post by letoplaya4 »

before i say anything about a week before all this i took my car for a launch and the alternator belt snapped (if u have a squeaky noise when u start the car or go into 1st and/or 2nd its the one of the belts) and now my car doesnt start since i cant find a place who has a 93 mx-3 4 cyl alternator belt...anyways...i guess u can say im a noob with car WORK...my friend gave me 2 intakes that were in his civic and a filter and as i placed them over the stock intake it seemed like theyd fit perfectly...so i removed the old filter, the air flow meter and the stock intake rubber tube...connected the civic intake and then realized the filter was too big...so i got to thinking and i just left the stock intake rubber tube and connected the "racing" filter and left it at that...as i looked at the cable and wodered wtf do i do with the air flow meter cable, my cousin told me that when he was hooking up the intake for his friends car he took off a cable and the car wouldnt even light up or anything...so i tried turning the car on and it wouldnt even turn the lights on..now, im sure the car totally died on me b4 any of this SO HERE IS MY QUESTION...would the car still work without the air flow meter, and IF SO, wtf do i do with the gay dangly cable for it? isnt there a fuse i can take out so it wont have power?

-Those websites have the belt you are looking for. partsamerica is the same as advanced auto and lot of their local stores have them in stock.

In short, you cant run the engine without the air flow meter. This meter measures the amount of air that flows into the engine and the computer uses it to calculate the amount of fuel that needs to be injected. So without it - most engines wont even start - some may be able to start the engine and idle for a bit - but the moment you step on the gas it will stall. Some engines might have a fail-safe option to run without the meter - but then your gas mileage would be poor because the computer is always "guessing" about the airflow.

You can probably install the racing filter after the airflow meter - in other words connect the meter to the rubber tube and then connect the filter to the meter.

If none of the lights come on when you turn the ignition key - it might mean that your battery is dead.

Yeah the airflow meter should have nothing to do with the lights. You probably killed your batt trying to start it with no alt belt. Try hooking a batt charger up to it and see if that works.

If you want to run an aftermarket Cone Filter, " Racing Filter" you have to get the adapter. Here is an example http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/92-93-MA ... dZViewItem

I hope this gave you a little help

mess? that word can be dangerous, lol
just be sure you have no air leaks and that the meter's plug is fully in.
And if your having truoble starting it, and you say "it almost catchs", and also you smell gas, theres a topic in the v6 forum named "DO THIS if your car floods out". Give it a try if nothing else works.
good luck

haha...alright, so the battery was dead the next day when i went to go fix the meter....all i did was plug in the wires and the car wouldnt start hooked up to my moms pos....so i hooked it up to my friends car that has a new battery and BAM, it started....and now its running :) so for all u kids messing with the intake, LEAVE THE AIR FLOW METER CONNECTED!! and if u have to replace the alternator belt, u best have patience....specially if u have no clue wat ur doing..ill post up here how i did it......im in tampa, and i finally saw a fellow mx3-er with a nice ride at the races....lucky for him i just got the car and im stock to the bone and im sure he has the klze (200hp) motor and he has a big turbo....so when i save up the money ill have a racing buddy :)

oh yea, since im broke i just cut the plastic connected to the stock filter so id just come straight out and tied down the racing intake pretty tight around the custom made adapter :) so thats a nice tip for all u guys
