Guys, done some searching on the forum but can't find the answer...
I am thinking of putting Catrol Edge 0w30 in the engine, but want to be sure I won't be doing any damage. I did see a post where someone said that running winter oil (5w30) in summer wouldn't be a good idea as it would be too thin - surely 0w30 as a year-round oil will be worse?!?
I asked Catrol and this is what they said:
Hi Pete
The Edge is our premium fully synthetic oil and will provide maximum
performance and protection for your engine - you could use the GTX
Magnatec 10W-40 semi synthetic also should you wish.
The 0W means that it is less viscous when cold allowing improved start
up and faster circulation round the engine providing greater protection
sooner. The 30 part refers to the viscosity of the oil at working
temperature - so the EDGE product provides the same protection as the
10W-30 at normal working temperatures, but is better in cold
temperatures.

Opinion?, I always found it hard to believe that the 0W?? or 5W?? oils would be as functional at working temps considering our working temp always appears to be hotter than the average import (of course IMO). I always strived for the best quality oil for the higher temps / higher revving applications believing I was getting better protection. This all comes from my track time on my motorcycle where an air cooled twin makes severe demands on it's oil. That said, if you are subject to very cold conditions I would shoot for a good compromise with a good quality 10W?? or even 15W?? and utilize a block heater for over night parking to ensure radiant heat from the warmed coolant is transferred to the oil in the sump and thereby guaranteeing and much easier morning protection/start and extra protection for the at speed requirements.

It doesn't matter. As long as the oil at least covers the base viscosity the manual asks for, it'll work. The manual calls for 10W30. If you want to use 10w40, 5w30, 5w40, 0w30, 0w50 ...... all cover the 10W30 viscosity coverages. A 15W40 and a 5W20 are about the only viscosities we can choose that won't cover the proper temperature ranges specified.

The first number is the cold weight. The lower this number, the more fluid it stays at cold temperatures. A 15W will be as thick as marmalade in 20 degrees below zero farenhiet. Not good. A 0W will still be nice and runny in the same cicuimstance. So our engines are rated for a 10 cold weight. 5 and 0 are fine also. 15 is not.
The second number of the two is the hot weight. So the higher the number, the LESS runny the oil gets when it's really hot. Though runnier oil will rob less power from your engine, it also won't provide as good a barrier. The higher number you get here, the more protection you'll get when the engine is hot. Our engines are rated for a 30 hot weight. 40 and 50 are fine also, 20 is not.
Optimum would be to get like a OW50. However, the wider the difference between the two numbers, the more vicosity modifiers are added to the oil to keep it more stable over a wider temperature range.

When i was getting my 1994 V6 outside during winter, i used 0w30 Syntec oil. No troubles at all.
