new problem : oil in exhaust

Post by babyblueMX3 »

ok guys here's the deal...I got an oil leak in the exhaust where the rear manifold joins the heads.
this is a brand new engine with new seals etc..
new headgaskets..

one thing is strange..this is new oil, but when it comes out the exhaust it's black and smell fuel :?

I got a couple of codes egr and vris related that I don't care..but I also got the tps code..could it be possible that I switch the tps connector with the fuel rails connector ? I think they are the only one that are interchangeable...

oh and this only happens in the rear exhaust manifold..front is fine

any inputs...

valve guide or seal?? thats a common problem, i know its new but could be bad.

Exhaust valve not sealing properly or stuck open partially?

Steve, your new set-up could be carrying old crap out from the IM and the exhaust sysytem to the muffler...just a wild guess. As far as connectors are concerned, both of my rail connector colours are gray and the TPS connector is black.

Is she gonna be ready for next weekend??

I sure do hope so it will be ready if I can get this little things straighened out

yes it could be stuff that was in the intake manifold but to be leaking oil like that ..no way..it something else..

I'd hate to think my BRAND NEW valve seals are bad

well at least its only your rear seals :)
Yah the only other thing is grease or carbon deposits being blown out from the engine under all this new beautiful boost :P

Are you absolutely sure that it's leaking from the exhause manifold, and not the valve cover, or maybe elsewhere? If you've got oil coming from the exhaust side of the motor, then surely you'd be getting a fair amount of smoke from the tailpipe and it should run roughly. Not to mention that that would indicate a hell of an exhaust manifold gasket leak as well. Possibly even a cracked head... But first, check the compression in the rear bank. If they're all fine and not leaking down, then surely you have a leak that just appears to be coming from there... I know it's tough to get your head back there to see, but rig up some lighting and mirrors and look from all sides.. plus, are you losing a great deal of oil? or is it just small amounts? I'm guessing that you're probably just dealing with a valve cover gasket leak or something in that area leaking lightly... Good luck!

first thing I've checked was around the valve cover for leaks and stuff like that and didn't found nothing..maybe it's from the inside (sparkplug well)..mmm.I'll check the plug's well for oil..
the exhaust manifold isn't torque to the heads yet (bolted but not torqued) that's why oil is coming from there but the main leak is where the the primarie joins the collectors (like hotshot headers) I didn't have any gasket at the time and bolted it right up anyways just to get thing started...this is where it's leaking the most...normal I don't have a gasket there...but it should'nt have oil there anyways.

Turbo oil cooled?.....could be coming from the turbo itself...now if you where sucking enough oil from the intake man. to come out the tailpipe, it should run so crappy you'd know right away.

I would like to add

pcv system is not properly hooked up (pcv valve to intake manifold is there) but the lines that are coming from both valve cover are dump in the air (not plug back into the intake piping)

could it be that the engine as 0 km on it and the piston rings are not sealed yet and is letting oil pass the rings ?

ok guys...it's not freaking oil but gas coming out of there !!!!
the smell of the smoke is pig rich in gas...
so this is what I think the problem is...I started the car earlier, then after 10 min of idling the seemed to run smoother and less smoke (but still some) then I started reving the engine, massive backfire. (only one though) anyways..the timing is off on the disty I think

could it be that the timing is off and the fuel is not properly burning and that's why it drips into the exhaust ??

I checked the compression and it's all good.

btw, I got every ecu here (thanks to Eric) and I can try every set-up
k8 ecu with je-50 vaf was the worst
then I swap over the kl36 ecu wich help the engine run way smoother and less smoke.(this leeds me to conclude the k8 ecu is way richer than the kl36)
haven't try my klde ecu yet,

I don't have a timing light with me...is there another way to time the disty without a timing light ?

btw the blow off valve sounds MAD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I almost wet my pants...imagine when boost is going to come in 8)

KLDE ECU - KL01 ECU?, if so you'll need the KL02 VAF and not the JE50

Oh Oh, Steve's got plumbing problems everywhere
