Sure it's possible, and if I recall correctly, it was a topic for a week or two a few years ago on the email list. I don't see where the benefit of an extra gear would lie for the MX-3. It sure wouldn't do a lot of good for 1/4 mile times, since that would just add another gear that would get shifted into, resulting in more lost time. If you recall, Mazda used a 6 speed gearbox on a handful of their limited edition Miatas here in the last few years. I remember seeing some great things about it's feel and quality, but what I dont recall seeing was rave reviews about how the 6speed box was even remotely necessary. We have a fairly short 1st gear as it is, and any longer of a 5th gear (ultimately would be the 6th gear in this case), and we'd lose virtually all ability to accelerate in that gear with a stock motor. Now, try to take this range of gearing we have now and shorten them all to the point that you'd cram yet another gear in between.... I just dont see where it would be worth the time and effort. Don't get me wrong... I've thought about it many times, and have begun investigating it more than once, but it would be little more than just a novelty at best. But hey, in our arena, it's tough to come up with any 'firsts' anymore, so needless to say, it's surely just a matter of time before someone appears with the 6speed monster mx-3.
sweet dreams, kids.

you're right, you would virtually lose the ability to accelerate in that gear......with a stock motor.
You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a White guy, the best golfer is a black guy, The Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the US of arrogance, and Germany doesn't want to go to war
