Agreed that the BP is a preferrable powerplant IMO & I wish it had been the RS standard engine but must disagree re the B6 DOHC. C'mon now, from my research, the B6 DOHC design & internals were engineered to be turbo'd. That's fairly unusual for a majority of engines. Not a performance engine? That's overstating a bit it seems... At least the B6 DOHC appears to have performance potential. My .02guyaverage wrote:...I wouldnt waste the time and effort on the 1.6, its a decent engine for gas mileage and its reliable, but its not a performance engine. It belongs in the 323 or Protege, not the Mx3. The BP should have been standard in the Mx3, KLDE in the GS, and the KLZE in the Probe and Mx6. Go for the BP.
What can u do to a 1.6L SOHC engine

-Jimyeh i said that part totally wrong, i have the 1.6 SOHC, but it sounds like swapping the 1.6 DOHC isnt very hard, since the 1.6 sohc tranny bolts up right? i guess ill go that route, tho will i be able to make ok amounts of HP? i could look into the turbo project too
now i hafta find a 1.6 DOHC thats for sale, fun, fun

Someone on this forum once posted that a completely stock 1.6 DOHC with 8psi of boost will make 160-170hp... a stock one running 13-14psi is said to make near 220hp. I don't have a turboed car yet, so I can not confirm this, I am only repeating what I saw someone else post.
Also, people has speculated about putting the head from the 1.6 DOHC on the SOHC... I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as you got the intake and exhaust manifolds... can any one confirm if just the head swap would or wouldn't work?

It might be slow, but it's not a civic!

Don't think it'll work. Discussed recently here, http://www.mx-3.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.ph ... 919#255919 and more detailed info exists on other past threads.freyguy_412 wrote:Also, people has speculated about putting the head from the 1.6 DOHC on the SOHC... Oh the ruckus..... The guy starts off saying he cant do swap because he has no money, but can do major mods. If he doesnt have the money for a relatively 'cheap' swap like a BP, where the hell is he going to get the money to buy monsterous cams, new exhausts, porting heads, turbo kits, intercoolers and piping, safc's, emanage's, and widebands for a 1.6 you guys are talking about? He said he didnt have much money.
The sohc 1.6 is an appliance, the least happy place to start. 130 hp certainly can be successfully done (and has), but its a freaking waste of time, money, and breath compared to the BP. To each his own I guess.
The dohc 1.6 yes certainly has more potential, but even that is a relative statement. Maybe its a lot easier where you guys live, finding Miata parts isnt hard but finding a turbo Capri or 323GTX around here to scavenge bolt-on turbo parts from is like walking down the street and finding a wad of $100 bills laying on the ground. They just arent around much, and when they are, they are beat to hell and back. You can always take a crap shot and get one off eBay, buyer beware. I can go the junkyard today and find 5-10 decent Escorts or Proteges with $500-$700 BP's without even trying, drop it in in a day, and have 130 reliable horses and still pass the emissions sniffer test. As far as ease, money, and time, its an absolute no brainer.
And now I see he is talking about swapping the sohc 1.6 for a dohc 1.6, then starting from THAT point? This is just making less and less sense. FIrst he cant do a swap, then he can. He doesnt have money, but now he can get a dohc, turbos, and everything else. Seriously, what am I missing here?
