I bet there is a wide variety of responses to this one ;) For me.. I run Napa Gold oil filters or K&N Oil Filters (prefer Napa Gold but if I cant find one the K&N will do)

I believe if you change your oil regularly before it starts breaking down you don't have to worry about it.

Easier to take the car to a shop and pay 10-15 bucks for an oil change than messing around with it at home and having to take the oil back for disposal.

To answer the question:
Summer Time: NAPA GOLD, KN, PUROLATOR are all good
Winter Time: Pay the 15 bucks.

The ultimate, particularly for our vehicles where clean oil is so critical, would be the CM oil filters. They filter down to 8 microns with very high flow, and use a replaceable filtration element.

They are expensive, however - $95 for the filter kit (which includes the machined aluminum filter housing, a filter element and an O-ring kit), then $11 each for replacement filter elements, and $6 if you have to replace the O-rings. After the initial purchase, they work out to be comparable in cost to a higher-end replaceable oil filter (like the K&N), but offer better performance.

I have found mazda filters to be $1 cdn more than fram. I therefore use a mazda filter because it also has a drain back valve incase there is a clog in the filter. IMO this is the best.
