OIL LEAK HELP!!!

Post by Bigred »

My Mx3 is stored for the winter so i was out pushing it backwards to prevent damage to tires and i noticed a puddle of oil underneath.
When i was using the car in the summer i had no leak.
Any ideas what could be going wrong here
please help

I think you have an oil leak :P haha ok seriously..why dont you go under and see where the leak is coming from? is it engine oil ot transmission? could be power steering? Its better to check it now because when you drive it again..it would just be horrible to rujn the car without oil one day. I have killed around 3 engines on other cars because the car lost all oil (even if i had checked it a week before) I developed a habbit of ALWAYS checking my oil because of this, I dont want my mx3 to die this way. Even if it never leaks oil bleh...better safe than sorry. Use the black light with the oil dye thing (forgot the name doh)

could be an old leak from somethign else no?

could be
radiator coolant,
oil from the sump, filter, pressure sensors can crack and leak.
oil from power steering on left hand side big yellow thing
oil from tranny on the right hand side more of the engine bay
- if tranny oil could be an axle seal that has broken and is leaking from there possibly
thats pretty much it.... to get a better idea so we can help you tell us where the leak is coming from inteh engine back or which side of the engine bay etc...etc... these details help narrow it down.

good luck

ok i was just out there and thought maybe id take another look. it seems that the oil is coming either from my oil filter or that area.
if it was the oil filter that would be a good thing would it not

there shouldn't be any oil in the filter if your car has been stored for the winter, maybe someone over tightened the oil filter and damaged the gasket .... resulting in a bad seal and the oil just leaked from the last time you actually drove the car

Yah just change the filter and if it still leaks ... then chances are if its leaking from the same area after the filter is changed is the shiney silvery part above it there is a small sensor in it, that you can see sticking out of it when you look at it with the hood open leaning over the radiator and looking down. That sensor can split up the middle and can get worse and worse. Dont buy one yet just make sure thats all.

Oh yah when you change the filter make sure you take some of the oil on your finger and rub the oil from your finger on the rubber ring around the new filter. That way the rubber wont burn and seal hard as a rock or crack and cause leaking as easily.

If you're getting a leak near the oil filter....hopefully that last person that changed your oil didn't accidentally leave the old oil filter gasket stuck to the block. Where now you would have two gaskets.
