Raiden, you're brave. Coming to the Mx3 forum and asking how to swap from a 5-speed to an automatic is a sure-fire way to draw abuse. You'd be much safer going door to door in Iraq waving a US flag with a Budweiser in your hand wishing people a merry Christmas.

On a more serious note, I doubt you're going to find any write-ups on how to do this. Basically you are going to need to read the automatic-to-5 speed threads and read backwards. You are going to need the tranny obviously, the center console shifter and trim, the cable, an ECU from an automatic car, the auto tranny ECU, a radiator from the automatic car (or an aftermarket tranny cooler which would be better anyway), and whatever else I cant think of.

I urge you to continue your trek towards automatic-dom. Automatics rule. :2thumbsup: (dems feudin' words round here...)

Wherever you end up getting one, get some kinda assurance/warranty the atx isn't already toasted. These trannies are available at junkyards everywhere after they fried on their previous owners. (I had one blow up as well) Mazda did a near legendary poor engineering job designing the unit to run reasonably cool - it doesn't & we know what excessive heat does to an atx...

Ya, Mazda didn't spend enough time at the drawing board with their auto trans. Seems to me that I've replaced my twice already and it was 2nd gear shot each time. Seems to be a history of this for the MX3. Now I've finally decided it's time for a swap to manual and for the price possibly upping the ante with a 2.5L if I can find one at a decent price. You'd likely be further ahead cutting a hole in your floorboards and doing like Flintstone than a suggested manual to auto switch.

Rockstar is right. My tranny didn't work (auto). And, when I went underneath to take a look, it had a 3 inch hole on one side and a 2 inch hole on the bottom. IT BLEW UP FORM THE INSIDE OUT! I do have a auto that I bought from a junkyard ($250) with a 1 month warranty, but I also added a tranny cooler as someone suggested on this site I should. I have had no problems what so ever........ since the cooler does it job of keeping the fluid cool.

what's wrong with your manual tranny? If it's still good, I may take it off your hands-may be getting a 93 GS with some valve body issues, and I'm wanting to do a swap as well. Hey, PM me, we may be able to help each other out??
