Cheap, easy Throttle body upgrade for your 4cyl guys

Post by Gro Harlem »

I have been doing a B6 SOHC 8v swap into my Festiva for the past couple weeks and have been hunting for "frankenstein" parts for the motor. At the junkyard the other day, I took a metric tape measurer with me and started pulling throttle bodies. Here is my findings:
Of all B-series Mazda engines with the intake routed to the drivers-side, all of their throttle bodies interchange onto any BP or B6 manifold. Here are the sizes I found:
90-94 Mazda 323 SOHC 8v 1.6liter (B6): 50mm
90-94 Mazda Protege SOHC 16v 1.8liter (B8-ME): 55mm
90-94 Mazda Protege DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm
92-93 Mazda MX-3 SOHC 16v 1.6liter (B6-ME): 55mm
94-95 Mazda MX-3 DOHC 16v 1.6liter (B6-DE): 55mm NOTE: This engines throttle body is DIFFERENT and will NOT interchange
91-96 Ford Escort GT DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm
91-96 Mercury Tracer LTS DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm
91-96 Ford Escort LX-E DOHC 16v 1.8liter (BP-DE): 60mm
And the cars I am unsure of (but wouldn't be surprised if they were 60mm):
95-98 Kia Sephia DOHC 16v 1.8 liter (BP-DE)
95-98 Mazda Protege ES DOHC 16v 1.8 liter (BP-DE)
The plenum's on all of these manifolds are the same size as their throttle bodies. So if you want to upgrade your throttle body from a 55 to a 60mm, you'll have to grind the plenum opening wide enough to get the full effects of the larger throttle body. A replacement gasket from Autozone, Pep Boys or Advance Auto Parts will work fine with any of these throttle bodies.
NOTE:
The throttle position sensors (TPS) on automatic and 5-speed cars are different. When you pull a throttle body, make sure its from a auto or manual car. You can always swap your TPS from your old throttle body to any of these throttle bodies and it will work, but you may have to re-tune it (a pain in the a$$). Also. the IAC valve is identical on all of these throttle bodies, so don't worry about that part.
I bought my throttle body from a 92 Escort GT for $30 from my JY and I even got the MX3 intake hose free with it (which is compact and fits better in my small Festiva's engine bay). I noticed a immediate improvement over my stock 50mm throttle body when I installed it.

And please NOTE: This throttle body upgrade only applies to you SOHC guys. The BP throttle body will NOT fit on the DOHC 1.6 in the 94+ MX-3 RS.

direct bolt on. I think it would fit the B6-DE as well, I don't see why it wouldn't
