back from the tack

Post by andy »

No rain this time :) I got six runs in. The trick is to get there when they open at 6:00. By 8:00 the lines were long.
On to my best time slip:
r/t... .750
60'... 2.407
330... 6.968
1/8... 10.698
mph... 65.73
1000.. 13.907
1/4... 16.652
mph... 82.32
over all I seem to be about .1-.2 seconds quicker with the KL TB. that sounds about right.
At least I'm going forward and not backwards.
Next line of testing will have to include something other than my stock exhaust. I'm working on the accusition of a flowmaster 40 sereis and a testpipe.
I forsee a clutch replacement not to far into the future. I had some sliping and feel that I could do better with something more than my stock
10 year old clutch. I had to be careful going into 2nd and 3rd or I would get to much slipping.

Not too shabby. Better 60ft than I could ever get with my 195/60's @ 32psi. Though your trap speed at the 1/8 and 1/4 are a good bit lower than mine [3.1mph and 3.5mph respectively]. That indicates a power issue. I know my car would slip like crazy into 3rd, to the point where it failed to move in 1st gear at all within a month. I don't think your clutch is that bad, so maybe you should check your VRIS and make sure your plugs are good and gapped. Also, fold your mirrors and make sure your windows are rolled up: less drag = more MPH.
All in all the new South Fla K8 drag beast is coming along nicely :)

Thanks Dave for the words of encouragement. I was not feeling well the Whole week prior to going and did not do the planned tune up, that might have helped ever so slightly. I also think I was hurting my times by messing with the TB adjustments, TPS and Idle air screw. I suspect #1 VRIS is not working, it failed the paper test a couple of weeks ago. I plan on doing further testing of it to fix or replace it.
I had the front tires at 25 psi. I will have to try the mirror trick next time, any little bit helps. As for the windows, they will not let you run unless they are all the way up. I found that out the hard way.
Out of the 6 runs all but one 60' time was in the 2.4's range. My last visit all my 60' times were in the 2.55 and up range. I'm launching the same way so I can probably chalk it up to the 60mm
TB and/or the Phenolics.
On top of messing with the exhaust and a complete tune up, I'm also planning on a short shifter. The throw right now feels like a mile inbetween gears.
Andy P. 93 GS Sub 16's or bust. :D

thats good for 18 th on the April drag board Congrats Andy , I hope the kids liked that one.
you could try lightening if you want to go thgat route , spare tire , rear seat, drop alt belt, block tb preheat, snow rims on rear? It's free and helps alot.

I actually planned to strip some of the stuff out that you mentioned but got home from work later than expecting and just turned around and left for the track. Oh well next visit I will be a couple of pounds lighter.
One thing that has me stumped is the shift points. I'm thinking I need to start experimenting
with shifting into 4th before the end of the 1/4 instead of holding out in 3rd. It seems the trap speed is not going to get any better than 82-85mph
unless I can take advantage of 4th gear. I'm thinking of shifting into 4th at some different rpms, this is part of the reasoning behind the shortshifter. I hoping to save enough time with my shifting to make up for the extra shift.

I usually shift 1-7500 2-7500 3-6500 4-hold to finish
but I have never tried holding out all gears to 7500 so I can't say which is better.
but I'll haver to figure out 5th with the 60 shot on because it is alot faster. possibly may hit 180kph govener in the ze ecu . it's alot to do in 13 seconds plus it's hard to focus on the tach, but these are the hardships of life :)
