ive always wondered
ive always wondered how those high horsepower cars and motorcycles do those long burnouts in burnout boxes? i think it has something to do with the emergency brake because it seems like after their burnout, they go forward and pull to a stop and seems like they have the brake up while burning out, then they drop it and stop?

The e-brake locks up the rear wheels so that wouldn't work. It may work for the FWD cars but I know in my car when I lock the e-brake and burn out the rear tires drag. Most of these cars have enought HP to keep the wheels spinning without having to use the brake at all. The reason they pull forward is because the wheels don't just screech to a halt, they slow before stoping. When the tires slow enuff for the friction to be great enuff to move the car, the car rolls.......or at least that's my theory.

Re: ive always wondered
a motorcycle can do it because its SO lightweight. You can physically just load up the front suspension, and light them up for as long as you want. Once its spinning, the friction coefficent is less, so you basically stay spinning for as long as you want.

Re: ive always wondered
Jesse's right about the motorcycles. If you watch someone do a burnout on a bike, you'll notice they stand up and keep weight OFF the rear wheel.
And with RWD cars theres something called a line-lock. My friend had one on his camaro. He'd flip a switch and hold the horn and the front wheels would lock up. Mash the gas pedal, and presto! a nice smoky burnout.
When he got rid of that camaro he got a firebird formula and it didn't have a line-lock. Instead he'd just powerbrake ----> hold the brake and floor the gas.
*** note: both cars were automatic
[ July 07, 2002: Message edited by: RayRay ]
Re: ive always wondered
yep, if you have automatic you use a line lock, it just blocks the flow of brake fluid to whatever wheels you use it on (hence using it on your rear tires if you have rear wheel drive). Then you can hold your brake and essentially lock the front wheels with all of the fluid being forced to them.

Personally, I wouldn't bother to get a line-lock on a fwd car. I have no clue how much they cost or even how to put one on. I would just pull the e-brake and spin the hell out of the front wheels. Just my $.02.
