Blew the head gasket last night

Post by maldo »

Like the subject says, my head gasket is toast. Not sure what else I damaged but should know by the end of the weekend. The car ran ok at the track except for the slipping clutch which cost me over 1 second from my calculations. B6T w/ 2.25" exhaust, 12psi, S-AFC, MSD ignition and PRM intake only was capable of 16.446et, pretty poor by my standards. My new clutch should be arriving in the next week or so. I am taking the head off tonight to see what kind of damage there is. I need to degrease the entire engine bay since the gasket blew on the outside section of the #1 cylinder- firing oil all over the place. Think I will do a good port and polish while I am at it.

I yanked the head off tonight to see how bad the head gasket was blown on my motor. The head gasket seemed pretty good, everything looked fine until I put a little more light on the motor. The piston in #1 cylinder was missing a small section off of it. At first I thought that it collided with a valve (same area as the valves close in on) but obviously it must have ran a little lean. The tuning I did on the S-AFC at 10psi must have been dead on and the jump to 12-13psi was too much. So I have to change some of my plans for the car. I am going to port and polish the head, intake and exhaust manifolds, probably do a valve job at the same time. My ACT clutch should be arriving in the next week or so, hopefully I will have my RR-FPR and new exhaust on then too.
Does anyone have an extra set of stock pistons or just one piston would do? Does anyone have a set of miata pistons? My other option is to get the Wiseco pistons that FM is selling ($525 is a little over my budget though). Would it be cheaper to just get a miata short block? If anybody has a piston or a set, let me know.
Chris Malden

Ewwwww nasty personally i would look into the short block, would prolly save you some time. Espically pending what type of damage was done, did you burn a hole threw it or was it detonation? If it was detonation what happend to the lil metal bits... =]

I had a brain wave last night. The motor that I took out and replaced with the B6T in my MX3 uses the same sized pistons that the GTX and Miata use. The pistons are from a '92 B6e SOHC motor, 9:1 CR, if I use new rings, would these work? My other option would be to swap in the entire block from the B6e and bolt the B6T head to it, opinions on this?
Thanks for all the offers for pistons and blocks, I will keep them in mind with this rebuild.
Chris Malden
ps - it was detonation, I imagine the metal bits are in my oil pan but I haven't made it that far.
