rebuild and turbo bolt on
rebuild and turbo bolt on
after reading the ten million posts about the b6t and bpt and how many thousands of dollars and pain they went through ive decided on a different route. i'm going to rebuild my 1.6 dohc with forged pistons, aftermarket etc. and buy the b6t exaust manifold and aftermarket turbo and intercooler. (i know there's more to get than that...) my question being: without swapping motors, how difficult is the new wiring? and is there enough room in the engine bay to put all the crap involved with a turbo?
this way i can start with upgraded aftermarket parts, as opposed to buying the engine and replacing ten year old parts.
thanks
dave

Re: rebuild and turbo bolt on
That is a good alternative but I do have a suggestion. Don't buy the B6T manifold, it has a tendency to crack. There are a few options for you. Build the bottom end using forged pistons, I would suggest boring it out 1mm in each cylinder while at it. Get some stronger connecting rods. You can use any part designed for the 1.6l miata for this stuff. This will give you a little bit more power and help keep your motor safe. Keep your compression 9:1 or less. You could buy a turbo kit for a miata if you want, the downpipe will be useless but it will give you a start. Most miata kits are able to generate 200whp. The other suggestion is to go to Larsen Motorsports and get a custom manifold, bolt on any turbo you choose, buy their dpipe and go from there. Ideally you would want to use a T3/T4 hybrid of some sort. The miata kits usually use a T25 or T28.
Make sure to upgrade the fuel and ignition systems. Clutch will most likely need addressing as well.
As far as wiring, why do you think you need to do anything? You aren't changing anything electronically are you? It will be the same. There is room for the turbo in the dohc engine bay. Finding ways of running i/c pipes is a little tricky but you can cut holes in the sheet metal behind the bumper cover and pass the pipes forward to the FMIC.
Hope this gives you some ideas.
Check these sites: www.larsenmotorsports.com www.flyinmiata.com www.rspeed.net/miata/

Re: rebuild and turbo bolt on
Buying a miata turbo kit will basically give you a turbo and a manifold that will work, and not too much else.
As far as wiring, i would really highly suggest going with a stand alone with any turbo setup. It just makes everything easier, and with proper tuning, you will get A LOT MORE POWER.
If you get the B6T or BPT, why would you ever get aftermarket internals?? Thats pretty retarded, and you should really put your money into the tranny, since that is the weak link.

Re: rebuild and turbo bolt on
IF you are lucky enough to be able to afford a stand alone, go for it. The S-AFC is a good alternative, it gives many of the same features the you would get with the more expensive units. The only downfall is that it doesn't offer the same depth of tuning. Just by swapping to a stand alone you could gain 50-100hp depending on the level of tuning and mods that are on a particular motor. I have seen many instances where large amounts of torque were discovered. They are worth the money, piggy backs will get the job done until you can afford the other though.
The internals on a B6T or BPT don't need upgrading until later on. As in breaking the 300hp mark. The B6ZE though would need it due to the higher CR.

Re: rebuild and turbo bolt on
i'll be replacing the stock b6 engine internals. and if i did get the new motor, i would want forged pistons and rods anyway... plus an engine swap is probably more $$$ than what i want to do. don't call me stupid, man. i know about cars. and this IS only an idea at the moment.
dave

Re: rebuild and turbo bolt on
Hold up a minute there, no body called you stupid. Is everybody PMSing this week? The motor swap itself will cost you less than building up your existing motor. Did you check the links I gave you? Flying Miata sells pistons for $525 and rods for $1000. My complete B6T motor was $500 CDN. I guess the thing to do is check out the exact costs of everything for each way of doing things. Then go from there and weigh the odds. My bet is that going with the B6T will be cheaper but it depends on your goals. If you were to upgrade the internals on a B6T, change the turbo and manifold...you may as well stay with the B6ZE. Up to you though.

maldo, where did you snag your motor from for so cheap?

Re: rebuild and turbo bolt on
A guy that I was in contact with had the BPT in his MX-3. He used the intercooler off of a 323GTX that some guy had. The car's tranny was shot but the rest of it was good. He bought the entire car for $500 off of the guy. He used the intercooler so all he wanted was what he paid for the car. I basically had my pick of parts off of it. I was able to pick of a i/c from another 323 guy for free. The MAF and ecu were included in my purchase but were not needed in the end.

that's pretty cool how you lucked out like that. do you know anyone else with motors laying around they don't want.

Go to the 323GTX egroup on Yahoo. There are always a few of the guys selling motors since most of them rally race and have spares lying around.

yeah, i'm there quite often. hey, do you have a fmic or the stock gtx version? how did you mount it?

Re: rebuild and turbo bolt on
I did a FMIC using the stock gtx i/c. I modified the end tanks and used 2.25" pipes as the i/c pipes. Ran the one from the TB to the passenger side, removed the windshield washer fluid bottle and ran it through an opening that I cut. The one from the turbo went the other direction but same basic design.

Even the NA version of the BP has a turbo friendly 8.8:1 compression ratio.

how did you modify the end tanks and what are the measurements of the i/c...if you know.

I think that www.corksport.com has the parts you are looking for but if i were you I sell your car and buy a miata. There are many turbo kits in the market for the miata.
Check you mine:
FMII plus a lot more stuff:
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumInd ... =vp&pw=
