2. when i took off all my vinly i messed up my paint in a few areas.
how much would it cost roughly mind you to go from silver stone mettalic to say brillant black or any other type of black ????
like a good job no crappy just paint over lol
If you are going to totally change the color of your car, you will be paying a good amount of money. Especially if you want it done right. Meaning painting the engine bay, door jams and so on. You will be looking at somewhere around 2,500-3,000 atleast. Usually with paint, you come out with what you pay for so be careful.
you have plenty of options, look aound your town for back yard mechanics with a good reputation. This manager at advance auto parts here were I live is going to assist me in painting and decaling my car. I already have the interior taking out, and he said he will drop 200$ dollars off. And if I help him paint it will only be 350, thats sanded primed and painted. We are holding out until I get my KLZE, so once the K8 is out of the engine bay, I can paint the bay, then install the KLZE. My car will be a surprise to all MX3 owners for 2004, I will garuntee the best one you have ever seen. No tackiness, just a straight serious looking machine which will impress performance wise, and in a visually. I will keep you posted.
Just make sure you look around your area, you may find some one that will do a great job for half the cost. It

lol@"god is making me get a paint job now".
Yea $350US, he told as long as I paint the engine bay and bring my car in with no interior, it would be 350 for the entire car to be painted. He does a real good job too. This asian guy that works with has a 94 civic painted baby blue and its a real good job. and the asian guy said this guy didnt charge him anything, all the asian dude had to do is buy the paint(hence they have been working together for sometime).

I am going to drive up to my friends shop in MI this winter break and he's gonna let me use his professional paint equipment. I priced the cost of paint and it came out to about $300 for some titanium metallic paint that they use on the limited edition miatas.
I'm not painting my engine bay b/c i don't really care, but I plan on doing the door jambs and other odd-ball places like under the hatch lid.
Man I think everyone is getting their mx-3's painted soon. I found a shop that will paint mine for 800 bucks. Only thing is, I do most of the work. I'm going to be doing the masking and removing/installing parts myself(such as door handles, mirrors, etc..) Some say masking is a poor way to do it, but I've founda way that works just as well as removing everything. If you take the masking tape and put it UNDER the seals and pull it up, it will paint under the seal and not get a drop of over spray on the rubber. I'm in the process of sanding each and every panel down to the metal and priming it. Sure, I'm driving a car around that has about 3 different colors on it but in the end it will save me thousands of dollars and it will be one of the best looking mx-3's ever :p I'm not painting the engine bay, that is just over kill for what I'm going for. I am however painting the door jambs and the little spot in the rear hatch that shows(when the hatch is lifted). I've actually considered painting it myself, and I still might...we will see how brave I feel when the time comes. I've got about a month to decide, since that is when the shop can get me in(if I decide to have them do it).

You dont have to sand the paint all the way down to the metal its just a waste of time.As long as the paint or clearcoat has no defects in it then all you have to do is scuff it. Your mx3 is black right? Then use a red scotchbright "Scuff pad". Sanding the entire car down to the metal is a waste of time and $$$. If you are going to scuff it do it until it is a chalky white and turns the paint a greyish color. If you have any questions or concerns just pm me.

(I have been taking a autobody class for the past 2 years, some im not just pulling this out of a hat)
I agree with above statement. There is no need to sand all the way down to the metal. Sand off the clear coat and make sure it is all scuffed. That is all that needs to be done. Remember when painting: it only comes out as good as it was cleaned prior to paint. Clean that surface like crazy.
Mx3TT you have a good point . Clean it with soap and water and then look into some precleaner. OR Final Klean is what dupont calls it.Especially do this if you do decide to paint your own car, if not the body shop will clean it thourghly, but it is always a good idea to go through and clean off any excess grease, grime, dirt(under the wheel wells, under bumpers, crevases,. And if you got my previous post in time and didnt sand the car the entire way down, make sure you get into all the creases, right up to the edge of the trim on the outside.Because if you dont it is more than likely the paint wont adhear and youll have peeling edges.
Again if you have any questions or concerns, just pm me or post it here. ( even if it is the smallest of questions 1 screw up can make a good paint job look like ****.
