My bulbs were already red. I took out in the surrounding to the brake light cause it gave a nice interior glow and matched my interior

acctualty i'm planning on using the middle brake light as a reverse light instead. i want to get a set of altezzas and tint the whole lense on them red (which covers the reverse on them) so i'll have to have a reverse somewhere, and this is the easiest way i can think of, plus it'll look better than having a bunch of led's or foglights or something like that.

(and curt, i'll look at it without a lense if it'll make you feel better not sure how i want it anyways)

Bein from virginia i can tell you right now that that's illegal. They'll not only cite you for the middle brake light not functioning, but they also get you for having all red lights in the rear. If you dont believe me try going thru inspection with a single middle brake light bulb not working. You'll fail

from the VA state code:

§ 46.2-1014. Brake lights.

Every motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer, except an antique vehicle not originally equipped with a brake light, registered in the Commonwealth and operated on the highways in the Commonwealth shall be equipped with at least two brake lights of a type approved by the Superintendent. Such brake lights shall automatically exhibit a red or amber light plainly visible in clear weather from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of such vehicle when the brake is applied.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to motorcycles equipped with brake lights as required by § 46.2-1012.

(1970, c. 17, § 46.1-262.1; 1972, c. 6; 1989, c. 727; 2000, cc. 54, 63; 2003, c. 964.)

only requires 2 brake lights and i'm still looking for where it says the requirements for reverse lights, but i'm pretty sure it would be legal. the middle light doesn't have to be a brake light, and they won't all be red i plan on leaving white bulbs in the middle light.

Check your codes. There is also a provision for "alteration of any factory-installed DOT approved devices". Without going thru them myself i'll summarize it as this...

You cannot alter any DOT approved items on the car in order to change their intended use. All-in-all its your decision but know ALL the fact before you choose.
