Cost of Alternator belt repair

Is there anyone who can tell me the estimate average cost of repairing an alternator belt and what are the consequences of riding on it when it is worn out (the belt's edge on one side looks like some old worn out levi jeans or something).Also My engine keeps on heating up really really really fast every time i drive.I mean i have to get to school but i want to also be lenient with her too.

Its a good thing to reach operating temperature fast - that's the function of the thermostat.

Or do you mean that the engine is reaching too high a temperature?

The average cost is $8 out of your pocket, and 10 minutes of your time. Riding on a worn belt doesn't bother me as much as riding on old tensioner pulley bearings. I had to replace a guy's belt last night because his bearings seized and tore up his belt. Replace the bearings when you replace the belts.

to ianl you just reminded me it might not be my engine.My meter goes up in like just 8mins of riding.But then again when i got out of the car today when i arrived at school my engine was steaming out smoke I guess because it was hot but i am going to see how hot it is once i ride the same distance home from school now.To lakersfan1 is it possible that i can install my own tensioner pulley bearings?

If the meter is going up only as far as normal temperature in 8 minutes, it sounds ok to me. But from where is this smoke coming - from under the hood, or the exhaust pipe?

Have you checked to see your coolant reservoir is full to the mark when the engine is cold?

Yes. The bearings are only $5 a piece at my local Autozone. I just did one yesterday. You pound out the old one, then pound the new one in. Just be sure when you pound the new one in, you put something over it to keep from crushing the plastic bearing cover.

to ianl the smoke is coming from under the hood. if i drive for like 30 minutes or more it starts smoking really really bad while i am driving and the engine or belt probably perhaps after about 5-10 minutes of driving starts to make this vroom hesitate vroom sound I figure its the belt needing to be renewed....now it didn't start doing this until just recent when i noticed my belt was shredding.i put a 50/50 mixture of water and coolant in it.I am going to see if it is a leak for coolant.To lakersfan1 what type of something could i put on the tension pulley to assist it and when i repair it do i have to jack my car up. I'm going to get the manual for my car from the library.Thank you.
