Hi
I just picked up my 3rd mx-3. Its a 93 gs se and has 173,000km. I was just driving it home and the CEL came on. I stopped and turned it off and the on and it went away. The fluid levels are good. Any ideas? Also there is no Catalytic converter on it and at idle it has a burning (maybe oil) smell. It doesnt blow any blue smoke. the valve cover gaskets and the oil pressure switch have some leaking.
Can any one please help me on this..Can I still drive the car??

Re: HEKP ME!!! new car probs
Typically 90% of the time on the mx-3, the CEL is a direct indication of ERG, PCV or exhaust/intake air issues. Being that the car has no cat, it is very likely the CEL is on detecting uncleaned or inefficient fuel burning. Although the engine may be operating ok. The burning fuel issue would likely greatly add to this common belief.
Also the most common cause on the mx-3 is due to O2 sensor, which is very likely, in your case due to the cars burning oil. Also, commonly the O2 sensor detects oxy at the exhaust end, as opposed to the more commonly believed intake end. So quite commonly as soon as a Cat is removed the engine light will go on, especially if the engine is burning blue, in a colder enviroment (due to insufficient operating temperatures).
This is likely the prob. don't be too concerned.
Try running the car a little hotter bring it up in temperature, to see if the fuel burns better for you and your 02 sensor (CEL) might shut off.
Otherwise run the diag. almost for sure air issues though, due to the cat and oil consumption.
