Knock sensor
Knock sensor
Does anyone know where the knock sensor is located on the 1.8 V-6? I keep pulling a code for it and I'm just going to change it to see if that fixes this check engine light. Also is there more than one? Thanks

Re: Knock sensor
If you remove your intake manifold and fuel rails, you'll see one wire going in between both cylinder banks. That's the Knock Sensor.

I used to know alot about MX-3's, but not so much anymore. Oh well.

Re: Knock sensor
Thanks for the quick response. Holy cow do I have to take all of that off to get to it or is there some easier way.
Re: Knock sensor
You'll need to remove the intake manifold, and the coolant passage tor reach the sensor and a special adaptor tool to remove it. <BR>You should make sure that the fault is not in the wiring instead of the sensor itself. you will save a lot of job.<BR>The wire goes from the sensor to connect to the ecu harness near the coolant fill cap. Inspect the connector and cables for damage.
Re: Knock sensor
Do you guys know what the ohm value should be for the sensor. What I mean is across the plug for the knock sensor, what should It read with a ohm meter.
Re: Knock sensor
The only reason I care about this is because every time the light comes on the car goes out of overdrive which is killing my gas mileage. I haope someone can give me some insight. I'm going back yto the trans shop today to have it looked at again but any input I can get before I get there would be helpful. Thanks
Re: Knock sensor
You probably already left but I doubt a transmission shop could help. The knock sensor is there to adjust the timing at high RPMs, something you shouldn't be doing in overdrive.
Re: Knock sensor
I just started reading a code 5 lastnight. my CEL comes on whenever i go above 3000rpm's. does anyone know what kind of resistence there should be in the knock sensor? where's the cheapest place to get a new sensor?
Re: Knock sensor
The sensor it a piezo microphone so it's will read as infinite (or 1 or 2 megaohm) resistance. When connected, it has a biasing which is used by the ECU to check its presence. <BR>With the sensor it should read between 1.5 and 3V. FYI, my harness reads about 4V _without_ the sensor.<BR>You can fool the ECU in having a good sensor connected putting a 330kohm resistor instead of the sensor. The ECU won't hear any pinging if you have it, however, which is somewhat dangerous.<P>I would like to hear your impressions on the car when the code 5 is present and/or benefits on having the sensor replaced. Mine has occasional faults too.<P>Miguel Fides, Mx-3 '92 1.8L
Re: Knock sensor
Thanks for all the responses, I'm going to try the resistor trick tonight. As it looks right now as it may be that they put the wrong torque converter in the car. The car is going into overdrive just not locking up. This only happens when the CEL comes on and that is only when car has been running for 10 minutes. Code 05 also says that a it is a knock sensor or circuit problems. I will find out more from the trans shop today. This only started happening after the new trans went in 2 weeks ago, so I feel it has to be someting in there like the torque convereter, temp sensor, or valve body problem. Any other suggestions would be welcome and I will post what happens as I continue on with this problem.
Re: Knock sensor
well, mine's a 5-speed so i know its the sensor, or the wireing. as far as my impression, it has a slight hesatation aroung 4K sometimes, other then that its not bad. i think i'm just going to pull a knock sensor from a junk mx-3 and see if that does it
