Whining noise?

Post by IceMole19 »

I'm new to the Mx-3 scene learned a bit from reading on here. I got one today a 93 GS, anyway everything on it runs perfect works perfect, decided to drive it as a daily driver instead of the Rx-7 which got works gas milage, the Mx-3 gets over 30mpg. Anway, there is a whine that comes from the engine when the rpm rises, doesn't matter if the car is moving or just reving it in the garage it is always there. I read and I thought maybe that friction gear but it doesn't sound like a tapping. Any idea on what it could be? If so can I fix it? How much do parts cost vs. a dealer or such? Thanks a lot.

Heck man, without being there it's hard to say. It could be your alternator, then again it could also be something else!<P>Check oil level, tranny fluid level, ps fluid level.

This may sound silly... but does it come from your stereo speakers.... I had that problem with my MX-3 when I got it... turns out the head deck had dropped its ground .... just a thought

Nope definatly sounds from the engine, I heard the friction gear is more like a knocking sound? I will try to locate the source tomorrow, he said it's been doing it for awhile.

Try looking for faulty bearings. I had a pulley that was making noise(the one for the steering pump if I remember correctly. I changed it and bam!, problem solved. And it was sort of a high pitched noise just like yours. :p

Took it to my uncles shop and they traced the whining noise to the PVC valve. The owner before me said he just put a new one on, maybe it's defective? Or do they all whine? Guess I'll go get one of those.
