KL-ZE aftermarket ecu and APEXI

Post by nicolasbeique »

What is the best ecu for the KL-ZE engine? Should I use the KL-ZE oem one (around $200cnd) or is there a better one for it?
What about apexi controller stuff (the non-vtec ones). Would it do anything on the KL-ZE? Is it even worth getting.
Thanks

I would just get the oem kl-ze computer because I don't believe apexi makes a stand alone maybe I'm wrong
but a stane alone would be the best choice but they go for 2000 - 3000 grand canadian

I have had my original mx-3 ECU rechipped with a 2.5 mapping, you could get it done by Corksport or Superchips, these give approx 8-12bhp increase over standard 2.5 mapping.
The reason I suggest this, instead of replacing the whole ECU, is that I did change the whole ECU and the car ran like S*!T, don't get me wrong, the car still went like a rocket, but I overall it was really rough, idle all over the place, emissions through the roof, used more fuel than a small nation.
It appeared that other elements of the ECU seem to be calibrated to the source car & the region i.e a japanese spec mx-6 or a American spec 626.
If you have your ECU chipped for the KLZE you could use either a KL31 or KL36 map. I've been told the KL31 has more aggresive torq & bhp curves, but my car is programmed to KL36 map and I'm very happy with the result(still very fast, but solved all the problems I mentioned before).
There are I believe more than five different 2.5 KL maps available and I would check that the one you use would pass emissions in your state/country. Sorry if I droned with this answer but getting the right ECU by trial & error can be an expensive business, as I found out from painful experience.

Chipping is a nice (and cheap) solution but...
Does any of you have the ROM file to share?
I have one coming from a standard (Kl-03-MTX) ford probe.
I would be interested in one from a ZE or tuned to it.
I think many will be interested too :)

This might be a possibility and a cheap alternative.
If you identify the correct chip from mx6 or suitable 2.5 and fit this to your own ECU this would still give about 190 bhp from a KLZE instead of the 200 provided by a reprogrammed chip or proper klze ECU.
[ July 05, 2002: Message edited by: mmac ]

What about the stand alone ones? Is that the same as the ones you plug in your laptop? How hard would it be to set your air flow and everything? could you just go at it and feel it until you peaked the performance?
Apexi are nice because they look blue and fancy <--- there I said it, that's it for my rice comments for today

Thanks :D
