Idle speed help

I have 93 MX-3 gs special edition and I just replaced the distributor. I got my timing right and she runs like a champ. The only thing is when she gets hot she idles high. If i am running down the road and I put it in nuetral the rpms go to about 1,300. I can tap the gas and that seems to lower back to where it needs to be. Any suggestions would be awsome.

where are you in florida? i have a similar problem. my car idles high when i first start it, then drops down when the engine warms up. even then, the idle is a little rough. i know i need to replace my spark plugs (and the valve cover gasket--its leaking iol onto my aforementioned plugs) but i'm not sure that that will solve it. it could be that the fouled plugs aren't sparking correctly and that's why it runs a little rough. you may want to try that if you haven't replaced the plugs yet. let me know if you find anything.

I did some research on this issue and I think I got a fix. I just needed to reset my computer. Don't ask me why. I reset it and started my car and it imediatly went to 2000 rpms. I adjusted it and my timing again and it fixed. Try reseting the ecu and see what happens. I live in Gainsville, FL.

How do you adjust timing? If you replace distributor you need to adjust timing or it wont change.

There are a couple ways to adjust the timing. The best but biggest pain in the a-- way is to use a timing light. The only thing is that its not easy to get to. The power steering pipe is in the way and its stiff. Also you have to remember to jumper the 10 and the ground pin. A word to the wise. Make sure you jumper the right one. I accidently jumpered the wrong one and my car wouldn't start. I couldn't figure it out. I finally reliazed that I jumpered the wrong one and I thought I blew my distributor. Luckily it was just the fuse. Another way is to just do it by ear. This is a littl harder to do but it works if you have patients. You'll know if its not set because the car will hesitate and do crazy s---. The timing mark should be at 10 degrees on the cam shaft. Just move the distributor until it lines up. Check out the manual on this website. It will help.

I'll also check all your air hoses coming in and going from your intake /air box. If one has a hole or crack on it, it causes the engine to get more air than it supposed to get. then the MAF and VAf are getting crazy, causing your idle speed to jump. [img]shrug.gif"%20border="0[/img]

I've got a similar problem....<BR>in neutral my car idles at 400-500rpm<BR>as soon as i put it in any gear it revs up to 1000-1200???? any one got ideas? worn clutch, bad spark plugs, i don't know!it's obviously trying to keep a constant idle and working harder to do so in gear, i just can't find out why?? I just went through this. In my case it was the distributor. My car was doing the same thing for quite a while when it died one day and wouldn't start. The shop replaced the distributor and now everything runs fine. Good luck!
