Mine does the same thing. I find if I Gunk the engine (clean) it well in a pressure washer that alleviates some of the smell.

If its your fuel pump, it will usually just die totally. Could this be ignition related? Electrical prob maybe?

The rear wiper was doing this first, then the fan went when I wrongly rewired my drivers door window switch (it broke). I then went and bought a new switch when that buggered things. The new switch is in and no other problems ...
