Temp gauge craziness.... WTF?!?

Post by Chiggles »

Been having this problem with my temp gauge now for months where it fully deflects to hot just a couple minutes later from a cold start. The engine's not actually overheating, my coolant flow and reservoir levels are fine. I've changed the temperature sender unit, the thermostat, and the gauge itself, and it STILL goes all the way to hot by the time the engine's finished warming up. Sounds to me like I have a short somewhere and/or that I'm not getting proper resistance to the gauge. What else can I do to fix this?!?! ....Grants, a little help, please? :P

You'd think with a fault like that it would be fixed by what youve done... or at least go to full deflection immediately when switched on....

What happens if you disconnect the wire from the sender unit? There should be only one wire going to the sender unit and it should be a BLK / ORG (The sender works by having a lower resistance the hotter it gets).

Disconnected and the gauge should remain on "cold".

Try shorting the wire to ground - it should go to full deflection ("overheating").

If you do this, be patient as it may take a couple of minutes for the needle to adjust properly.

I didn't do it myself, but when I watched the guy that did it for me, and when he disconnected the sender unit, the gauge DID remain at cold. How do I short that BLK/ORG wire to the ground? And if I do this, are you trying to tell me this is some sort of way to "reset" the needle so that it knows what the proper temperature is? Sounds ghetto..
