Have a 1993 MX-3 6 cylinder with 124 000 km. Just had transmition done. Was getting it checked by the mechanic and it was making an odd noise when idling. He said to ignore it, probably the heat sheild (we're in the middle of a heat wave). Was driving afterwards on the freeway. Thought the window wasn't all the way up and put up the switch. My speedmeter went wacky - up and down and all over. Tried the window switch again while my foot was on the accelerator and nothing, took my foot off the gas, and it went wacky again. There was no loss of power with the car, though. Then my radio cut out a few times. There was a bit of a whistling noise from the front right of the engine when driving.Took it immediately to the transmition mechanic and it took a few turns to start it up again. He figures it's the alternator. Any thoughts?
Also, have heard that rebuild alternators can be a problem for this model of car...any truth to that? Any ideas of how many hours of labour I should expect for the alternator?
Haven't had the timing belt done yet....could that be adding to the problem?
Many thanks for any and all suggestions!
Alternator? Something else?

I haven't had problems with rebuilt alternators on any of the cars that I've owned. One of them even survived 2 cars!
If you REALLY feel that you have to take it to a mechanic, you shouldn't be charged more than an hour and a half. About $80. However, I don't see why you shouldn't do it yourself.
