Exhaust...how close is toooo close

Post by cjthor »

Ok....Just finished my 3 inch exhaust for the MX....First of all the downpipe is like 2-3 inches from the ground...OUCH! Now the exhaust is about 2 inches from the shifter linkage but looks like its hangin down a bit too close to the ground. how close can i hang the exhaust to the shifter linkage and not have probs?

Sit there and shift through the gears, if you hear it hit the exhaust it is too close. My shifter comes with in about a 1/8" of the exhaust. I've had it closer than that on the old setup. You'll end up putting bronze oil bushings or the likes in you shift after a long while. Mine is getting to that point and I may take a look at doing mine while I'm saving up for a twin disc clutch setup (probably not putting my car back together untill then, maybe).

if you are worried about heat, heat wrap, then use the foil duck tape, And if you are really concerned, add another layer...

^^^^^what he said^^^^^

mine is like 1/2 inch from my "drive shaft"
but when i go 3" its going to get closer.

im going 3" to a dump valve then 2.5" the rest of the way back i think a 3" dump will be sufficiant.

Heat is going to be your only consern. Wrapping it is a great idea but you might wanna think about adding some hangers to keep it away from your shifter.
