Wow, that broken valve spring retainer got wrecked.

And that piece found it's way into the top of the head? Are there any holes large enough to accommodate it? Was it jammed in between something when you found it?

The only holes i can think of that are big enough are the intake and exhaust ports so it seems your intake may have fialed and had that piece break and fall in through an intake port and where it broke a coolant line also ended up seeping fluid into it.

Ah I misunderstood, I thought the piece was found in the cylinder head not intake.

And I don't recognize that metal piece, is there any chance you might have sucked it in through your air filter?

Which one? The one on his hand looks like half a valve seat. The one in the last pic is a broken retainer.

You gotta love Mazda engines. What other engine could ssurvive that damage?

Depends on what the damage is inside the cylinder. It's a safe bet that the heaad is probably scrap. I don't know about the piston and the cylinder wall...

Belt valve stem for first one? Looks fairly catastrophic! Unlucky.

Today we took off the head...

Carnage... :freak:

Dropped valve, big hole in piston #6, cilinder heavily damaged
Cilinder #4 cracked about 1" down.
