As a noob who is slowly understanding more and more about cars, can you give me some more info on this please?

the #3 piston hated living.

I am not sure how this happened... but the piston rod is snapped in half, the bottom part scarred the crankshaft, put a hole in the main bearing support, cracked the #4 piston, and also shattered the lower portion of the #3 piston, then they all had a party

that's the strange thing, it's not boosted, and it was timed correctly, it was running pristine (according ot my roommate) then on a 600 mile road trip, 100 miles away from home, it goes "clunk, clank" dead. these things don't have enough power to cause these type of catastrophic failures, I didn't think! My theories is either one of the bolts on the connecting rods fell off, and the strain bent it and it caught... I really don't know. but it obviously jumped off the crankshaft whatever it was, and one bolt stayed on at least.

How many miles on the motor?

Could just be a poor quality control rob bolt that eventually failed via fatigue in some freak, hairline crack.

the engine sat outside for a while and he took out the spark plugs, so the water plus oil got all sludgy.
it was really nasty when I first dug in there.
